Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduces Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile as the new starting Pokémon. However, if you’re looking for a more classic experience reminiscent of the original Kalos region, you’ll want to find those earlier Kalos starters instead.

As a Pokémon fan, I’ve heard you can find some seriously strong Pokémon around Lumiouse City! But it’s not like they’re just hanging around – you really have to search to discover them.

You’ll need to complete a few side quests around town to get Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. The good news is that each of these Pokémon also has a powerful Mega Evolution you can unlock!

Let’s break down how to get the Kalos starters in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

How To Unlock Froakie In Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Okay, so Froakie, one of the starter Pokémon from the Kalos region, can be a real pain to get if you’re not great at those tricky obstacle courses. Seriously, this little guy loves completing them, but if you struggle with those challenges, unlocking Froakie is gonna be tough!

Okay, so if you want to get Froakie, you need to start the side quest called ‘A Challenge from Froakie.’ You can find it by heading north from the Jaune Pokémon Center to that big scaffolding obstacle course. When you get there, talk to one of the construction workers, and they’ll tell you all about Froakie and how much they love those courses!

This challenge requires you to finish three obstacle courses, and each one gets progressively harder. You’ll have 30 seconds for the first course, 40 seconds for the second, and 50 seconds to complete the final one.

The first two courses are fairly easy. However, the third course, which is located in the north of the city, is considerably more challenging.

Okay, so I finally finished that super tough third obstacle course, and guess what? Froakie was seriously impressed! It actually decided to join my team – I’m so excited!

How To Unlock Chespin In Pokémon Legends: Z-A

To get Chespin, you’ll need to complete a quest called ‘A Feisty Chespin.’ During this quest, you’ll battle a lively Chespin. You can find this quest located between the Hibernal and Centrico Pokémon Centers.

When you get there, you’ll find a woman whose car is stuck behind a Chespin. This Pokémon is eager to battle and won’t back down from a fight.

To finish this quest, all you have to do is defeat Chespin in battle. You’ll need to win three times, but it should be fairly easy if you have a Pokémon that’s a Fire, Bug, or Flying type.

How To Unlock Fennekin In Pokémon Legends: Z-A

The last Pokémon in the Kalos starter trio is Fennekin, which you can get by finishing the ‘Get Well, Fennekin’ side quest. You’ll find this quest north of the Pokémon Center in Magenta Plaza, across the river.

During this task, you’ll discover a sick Fennekin resting in the park. A woman will ask you to help it, telling you to find an elderly man at Café Classe, which is close to the Vernal Pokémon Center.

The old man will ask you to find a Revitalizing Twig in Wild Zone 5. Go to the Wild Zone and search for it. Once you have the twig, bring it back to Fennekin to receive your final Kalos starter Pokémon as a reward.

Now that you have all the Kalos starters, you can work on unlocking each of their mega evolutions.
