A fun part of the game is improving items with Mel. However, the Hand will eventually steal those upgrades, and you’ll no longer be able to use her shop.
It’s definitely annoying when the game takes away health you’ve worked hard to gain, but it’s not the biggest problem you’ll face. To get Mel back, you’ll have to go to the Redacted area and rescue them from whoever captured them.
This can be tricky, but you’ll find the alternate ending while searching for the tunnel to Mel. This guide will show you exactly where to find that tunnel and what enemy you’ll need to defeat to rescue Mel.
How to Reach Mel

Okay, so if I want to find the tube, here’s what I gotta do. I need to start at the Vault, and then just head left – and seriously, no taking any tubes or wandering off course until I get there!
You’ll come to a large, empty room. In the lower right corner, you’ll find an open drawer filled with robot parts. This drawer actually conceals a hidden entrance to the next area.
Once you reach this location, simply follow the main path. You’ll need to turn on all the Gloomwater Pumps you find to clear the water blocking your way.
Once you’ve started the first pump, go left through the newly opened tube. Continue heading left until you reach a tube that leads to a big room. In that room, you’ll find a broken robot you can salvage an Old Core from.
Enter the room and turn left. Continue down this path, and you’ll find the next Gloomwater pump. Turn it on, then head to the right.
Continue to the right until you find another pump to turn on. Then, in the next room, lower yourself down to the floor – you’ll need to activate one more pump to proceed.
Go down to the area filled with Gloomwater. Then, use your Striders to climb along the ceiling until you reach the metal grates. Climb up the grates to find the pump and activate it. After that, return to the upper level and continue moving to the right.
As you approach the pipes, you’ll notice a tube on the left, but ignore it – it’s not needed to continue. Keep going to the right, carefully pass the razor blades, and you’ll find the Overseer you need to repair in order to reach the Crucible.
There’s a door near the subway that offers a quick way back, just in case Debby defeats you.
Okay, so after you save that little robot, you’ll find a tube that takes you down to where you fight Debby. Honestly, Debby isn’t that hard. They don’t really have any tricky attacks, and if you’ve been leveling up, you should be able to take them down in one shot!
Rewards for Saving Mel
You can visit Mel’s shop again by taking the shuttle and fast traveling. Not only will the shop be open, but you’ll also receive a special reward called Gratitude.
Subscribe to the newsletter for detailed MIO rewards guides
MOD: Gratitude
- Effect: Restores an extra layer of protection (non-stackable) when Mio stays on the ground for a short time
- Modifier slots required: 40
Finding extra health is always helpful in metroidvania games, but it’s especially welcome in MIO, given how tricky some of the jumping and movement can be. With Mel returned, you’re now prepared to face whatever challenges come next.
