How to Get a Birdhouse in Aloft

Building a birdhouse is vital for any Aloft island, as it draws birds and thereby boosts the island’s wildlife population. This is particularly significant for islands that have been purified, as they frequently lack animals or house those affected by corruption that need healing. Here’s a guide to help you make your initial birdhouse!

How to Craft a Birdhouse in Aloft

Starting the process of building your own birdhouse involves finding a damaged or broken one initially. It’s impossible to learn how to create a birdhouse from scratch without first discovering an existing damaged model. Some remote islands have these damaged birdhouses, and by repairing them, you can obtain their blueprint.

Step 1: Find a Broken Birdhouse

To determine if an island’s birdhouse requires maintenance, consult your Field Guide. If it instructs you to fix a specific number of birdhouses, then you are at the correct location.

Based on my own adventures, I discovered my initial birdhouse on an island in the southern part of the Emerald Isles archipelago (take a look at the map snapshot provided). This was the final location I visited within the biome after setting off from the far right and moving towards the left. If you’re taking a similar route, this could be where you might find it too, although other players have found their first birdhouse in different locations.

Step 2: Repair the Birdhouse

Damaged birdhouses negatively impact the ecosystem within Aloft. To identify a damaged birdhouse, look out for any signs of disrepair. For restoring the birdhouse to its original state, here’s what you’ll need:

MaterialQuantityHow to Obtain
Wood1Cut down a tree using a Stone Axe on an island that doesn’t have a damaged ecosystem.
Leaf Cloth1Crafted from x3 Leaves, which are gathered from cutting down trees.

To repair the birdhouse:

  1. Equip your Stone Hammer.
  2. Approach the broken birdhouse.
  3. Interact with it by hitting it with your hammer (left mouse click).

Step 3: Sketch the Birdhouse

After fixing it up, here’s what you’ll need to doodle the bluebird house to get its recipe. For that, you’ll need to gather a few items – one sheet of Paper and one piece of Charcoal. You can find Paper scattered across tables and ledges around Aloft, while Charcoal is collected from burnt tree stumps. If you don’t have any Charcoal, you can always make some. Don’t forget to carry a Sketchbook, as it’s essential for this task. If you don’t have one yet, you can craft it directly from your inventory (just press ‘I’ and navigate to the ‘Crafting’ tab) or create it at a Workbench using these materials:

MaterialQuantityHow to Obtain
Wood2Chop down any tree with your Axe.
Paper1Find on tables/ledges around Aloft or craft using Paper Pulp.
Charcoal1Destroy burnt tree stumps with your Axe.

With your Sketchbook in hand:

  1. Equip it from your hotbar.
  2. Stand in front of the repaired birdhouse.
  3. Hold the right mouse button to activate the sketching mode.
  4. When the gray silhouette of the birdhouse appears, click the left mouse button to sketch it.

Once you’ve finished drawing the sketch, you’ll gain access to the Birdhouse blueprint, enabling you to create a birdhouse for yourself.

Step 4: Crafting a Birdhouse

Unlocking the recipe, you’re now ready to construct birdhouses from your Building interface. To access it, navigate to the Farming tab after pressing the ‘B’ key. Here’s a list of essential items to make a birdhouse and their locations for easy gathering:

This way, the information is presented in an easier-to-understand format, maintaining the original intent while making it more accessible to the reader.

MaterialQuantityHow to Obtain
Wood3Chop down any tree with your Axe.
Turf1Use your Dorkip on any patch of grass.
Rope1Craft from x2 Mykter Fibre using the Workbench or your Crafting menu. You can get the Mykter Fibre by defeating corrupted mushroom creatures or killing nodes on corrupted islands.

After constructing a birdhouse, you can set it up in any location across an island, and it’s likely to invite a single bird to that particular island. Regardless of the number of birdhouses on the island, only one bird can be drawn at a time.

Why Build a Birdhouse?

Building a birdhouse on an island attracts birds to dwell there, which is the sole method of boosting the bird community within the game. Birdhouses play a crucial role in revitalizing the ecological balance of contaminated and ruined islands by increasing the bird population. If you wish to diversify the island’s wildlife, consider transporting additional animals from overpopulated islands or employing the in-game console command to summon creatures.
