How To Do Grab Tricks And Combos In Skate

At the beginning of Skate, the tutorial will teach you basic flip tricks and grinds. These are important for playing the game, but they aren’t the most impressive things you can do in San Vansterdam. Performing ‘grab tricks‘ – grabbing the board while in the air – has always been a key part of skateboarding games because they look great and show off your skills. In Skate, grab tricks also help you earn a lot of points, which you’ll need to succeed in more difficult challenges.

Once you’ve found the ideal settings in Skate and finished the tutorial, learning grab tricks can be tricky because the game doesn’t offer much guidance. Luckily, we’ve got a straightforward method to help you master these impressive moves.

How to perform grab tricks in Skate

Skate has tons of different grab tricks, and learning them all can take time. Luckily, there’s a helpful resource called the Skatepedia – or the complete list of tricks – that’s available to every player after finishing the tutorial.

I recently discovered how to get to the Skatepedia in the game! You just need to hit the cog icon in the top-right corner to get to the main menu, and then you can select it. It’s seriously awesome because it explains how to do *every* trick in the game – all the flip tricks, grinds, even the tricky off-board stuff. But honestly, the best part is the section on grab tricks – it’s been a game changer for me!

Okay, so if I’m checking out grabs on Skatepedia, hovering over any trick tells me exactly what it is and what buttons to hit. Usually, doing a grab means holding down LT and RT (or L2 and R2 on PlayStation) while I’m in the air. But here’s the cool part: I can change up the grab by flicking the right stick in different directions! Some of the harder grabs even need me to move the right stick *before* I jump, then hold LT/RT while airborne. It adds a lot more control!

Skate features a variety of grab tricks, broken down into categories like Basic Grabs, Modified Grabs, One-Footed Grabs, No-Footed Grabs, Ground Grabs, Hand Plants, and Foot Plants. The Skatepedia promises even more grab tricks will be added soon, especially during the early access period, so expect this list to expand.

If you’re new to Skate, we suggest starting with the Basic Grab Tricks to learn the core movements. Once you’ve practiced and mastered those 10 tricks, you’ll be ready to tackle more challenging ones. Here’s a guide to performing those Basic Grab Tricks:

  • BS Grab: Hold RT/R2
  • FS Grab: Hold LT/L2
  • Double Grab: Hold LT/L2 + RT/R2
  • Tail Grab: Hold Up on RS + LT/L2
  • Nose Grab: Hold Down on RS + RT/R2
  • Stale Grab: Hold Right on RS + LT/L2
  • Weddle Grab: Hold Right on RS + RT/R2
  • Crail Grab: Hold Down on RS + LT/L2
  • Seatbelt: Hold Up on RS + RT/R2
  • Rocket Air: Hold Down on RS + RT/R2 and LT/L2

While grab tricks in Skate require more practice than flips or grinds, mastering them is incredibly rewarding. They’re key to earning higher scores and more experience points, so pick a favorite ramp, set your session, and start working on those grabs!
