How To Beat Carvex in Metroid Prime 4

The Metroid Prime series is known for its challenging and memorable boss fights, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond continues that tradition.

Metroid Prime 4 immediately feels like a classic Metroid Prime game. It successfully blends fast-paced, first-person shooting with the imaginative boss battles and exploration that fans of Metroidvania games love.

You’ll face Carvex as the first boss in Metroid Prime 4. He might remind you of Flaahgra, but that’s where the comparison stops. To beat Carvex, you’ll need to use one of the new abilities introduced in this game.

This guide will show you how to beat Carvex by explaining its attacks and giving you a winning strategy.

Okay, fellow Metroid Prime fans, listen up! If you’re going for 100% completion in Metroid Prime 4, seriously, scan everything on Carvex before you take it down. You need to find and scan all three of its parts to get that perfect completion rate. Don’t skip it!

Carvex Abilities

Carvex does have a few attacks, but nothing particularly special beyond the basics. However, understanding what it can do is still important so you can be prepared for its attacks and know how to respond.

Ability How To Deal With It
Carvex will attempt to smash you with its tentacle (or tentacles). It can also swipe them in your direction. Regardless of the attack, it is very telegraphed. Side-step to avoid taking damage.
When Carvex’s body is exposed, it will spawn thorns that head in your direction. Side-step to avoid taking damage.
Drone-like enemies will fly into the air and slowly chase you. Shoot them down and obtain life or missiles from their corpse.
Carvex’s tentacles will, on occasion, land on the ground and rotate around the room. Jump over them to avoid taking damage.

How To Defeat Carvex

As soon as you enter the room, you’ll encounter a large flower-like structure that releases one tentacle – meaning it’s time to fight the boss! Be sure to scan Carvex, and let’s begin.

You’ll see a vulnerable area on each tentacle, covered by a protective plate. First, shoot off the plate to reveal the weak spot, then destroy it. Once a tentacle is completely damaged, the armored flower pod around Carvex will open, exposing its main body.

As you dodge the thorn attacks, it’s time to deal damage to its body to reduce its health.

Missiles are your most powerful weapon, and you can get more by destroying the enemy drones.

Once the flower pod armor reforms, Carvex will gain two tentacles. To defeat each one, first destroy the armor, then shoot the tentacle’s weak point. Make sure to take them out one at a time, or a new tentacle will grow back.

You have a couple of options here: you can rush through this section, or use the Psychic Visor’s Control Beam to slow down time. This will allow the beam to destroy both tentacles, revealing Carvex’s body.

Continue attacking as you did before until the flower pod armor reappears. This time, you’ll face three tentacles, so repeat the dodging and attacking strategy, but be prepared for more attacks to avoid. When Carvex reaches 25% health, the final phase will begin.

Carvex is back with his flower pod armor and three tentacles! He’s also added roots that soak up damage from the Control Beam. To beat him, first destroy the armor on the tentacle’s weak point. Then, focus, activate the Control Beam, and maneuver around the roots to destroy all the tentacles in one go.

Once you’ve hit Carvex’s weak spot four times, fire the final shot to defeat him, claim victory, and collect your rewards.
