How The Madison Season 1 Ending Sets Up Season 2

Taylor Sheridan’s latest Western drama, The Madison, has finished its first season after a very brief run on Paramount+. All six episodes, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell as New York couple Stacy and Preston Clyburn, were released over just two weeks. The story begins when Preston and his brother Paul die in a plane crash, leading Stacy and her family to move to Montana temporarily to grieve.

Audiences have been following Stacy Clyburn as she adjusts to life in the Montana countryside, a place her late husband, Preston, often escaped to and cherished. Despite the change, Stacy is committed to making Montana her permanent home, hoping to feel closer to Preston’s memory there. After organizing a memorial service for Preston with friends in New York, Stacy decides where she will live going forward.

The Clyburns Say Goodbye to Preston

In the Season 1 finale, “I Give Me Permission,” the Clyburns try to return to their everyday lives in New York City, but things quickly fall apart. Encouraged by her friend Liliana, Stacy starts seeing a therapist, and their sessions take an unusual turn. Stacy is skeptical of therapy and even makes critical remarks about Dr. Phil Yorn, but he surprisingly welcomes the challenge.

Stacy attempts a unique therapy – drinking to help her sort through her life and feelings of isolation, especially in her large apartment. Though her daughters and granddaughters live nearby, she deeply misses her late husband, Preston. Meanwhile, Paige and Abigail are also facing difficulties. Paige, overwhelmed with grief, lashes out at a coworker who makes a hurtful comment about her father, and Stacy steps in to prevent her from being arrested. Paige’s emotional turmoil truly surfaces upon arriving in New York, as she realizes she no longer feels the need to prove herself to anyone.

Abigail is preoccupied with her failing relationship with Van, the sheriff in the Madison River valley. A brief, unpleasant encounter with her ex-husband makes her realize how much happier she was with Van when they were both in Montana. However, even a single phone call can’t resolve their issues, leaving their relationship strained and distant.

How The Madison Sets Up Season 2

The family’s final memorial for Preston in New York felt more like a casual cocktail party than a true celebration of his life. This was the last straw for Stacy, who was already considering skipping the event. She abruptly left and took a taxi to an unknown destination, needing to escape the feeling that no one there really knew Preston like she did.

Abigail, Paige, and Russell report Stacy missing, but she’s actually in Montana, mourning at Preston’s graveside. She’s deliberately cut ties with her life in New York. This mirrors a past event: years ago, Paul did the same thing after his wife died. A flashback shows Paul’s wife was tragically hit by a car in the city, and he moved to the countryside seeking solace.

Abigail and Paige will probably soon discover their mother’s whereabouts. She hasn’t mentioned wanting to be anywhere else while she’s grieving, and they still have connections in the Madison Valley that offer some comfort. However, the family is still struggling with disagreements about what to do after Preston passed away. Despite their sadness, they don’t seem ready to embrace a quiet, rural life right now.

Season 2 of The Madison will likely focus on increasing tension within the Clyburn family, particularly a conflict between Stacy and the rest of her family. We might also see protests surrounding the burial sites of Paul and Preston, something that was hinted at but not expected to become a problem. All of this suggests the new season will be filled with arguments, disputes over land, and intense family drama.

I just finished binging all six episodes of The Madison on Paramount+, and it’s definitely worth checking out! The good news doesn’t stop there, either – I’m hearing they’re already working on a second season, which is fantastic. Consider me excited to see where they take the story next.
