In my three-hour hands-on session with Digimon Story: Time Stranger at PAX West 2025, I managed to understand the intricacies of Digivolutions and De-Digivolutions in this latest installment. While I’ve noted numerous other details for a different write-up, I felt it was important to delve deeper into the Digivolution system due to its complexity and richness, which I wanted to highlight separately.
In the current version of Time Stranger, Digivolutions can occur outside of combat without needing a specific location such as the DigiLab, unlike previous Cyber Sleuth games. If you haven’t encountered or developed a certain Digimon before, their Digivolution and De-Digivolutions will be shown as silhouettes, but the game will provide you with the necessary requirements to achieve them. These basic requirements typically include reaching a specific Agent Rank and meeting certain stat thresholds. It appears that Agent Rank can increase through main story progression and potentially side quests, although I wasn’t able to confirm this during my playtime.
In Time Stranger, it’s worth noting that the core aspect revolves around the Digimon’s Personalities significantly impacting their stat development. The game features 16 unique Digimon Personalities, each of which affects the progression of specific stats on a Digimon as it levels up. For instance, a Daring personality enhances Attack and Defense, while a Strategic one boosts Intelligence and Spirit.
As a gamer, if I’m aiming for Kyubimon to Digivolve into a Digimon that needs at least 940 Attack and 890 Speed, I should focus on nurturing its Zealous personality since it boosts the growth of those exact stats. Keep in mind though, each Digimon has an evolving path that’s not strictly linear, so it’s all about personal choice when deciding which stats to prioritize.
The Time Stranger’s DigiFarm system provides another efficient method for enhancing a Digimon’s particular attributes. A variety of items can be used either to nourish or develop the Digimon. Training Sets, in particular, provide a mechanism to influence a Digimon’s character traits towards a specific quadrant on the Digimon Personality Type chart. Using our previous example of Kyubimon, its Zealous personality is situated at the top-right section where all Valor-type personalities are. On this chart, the X-axis spans from Understanding to Emotion, while the Y-axis covers Companionship and Affection.
The Training Set called “The Punching Bag” enhances a Digimon’s Attack, while nudging its personality more towards Heart and Affection. This is ideal since Zealous personality traits are found in those areas. To commence training on the DigiFarm, you’ll need to dedicate about 30 minutes, as I was told that your presence in the game is essential for the timer to count down. However, you can expedite the process by using in-game currency to instantly finish the training. Training a Digimon on the DigiFarm means they’ll be out of both active and reserve teams during this period.
Furthermore, during non-combat situations, your Digimon may engage in conversation with you. In these instances, you’ll notice symbols next to dialogue options which represent a response choice. These responses correspond to different Digimon Personality Types quadrants, allowing you to shape their character development as well.
When it comes to De-Digivolving, not just skills matter, but personalities play a role too. The process of De-Digivolving is less stringent, but it necessitates that players have previously encountered the specific Digimon and that the personality of the Digimon they’re trying to De-Digivolve aligns with the base personality of the Digimon they’re aiming to transform into during De-Digivolution.
As a gamer immersed in the digital world of Digimon, I always keep an eye on my companion’s personality, clearly shown on their status screen right under their stats. There are intricate sub-systems that delve deeper into the mechanics behind Digivolution – Talent, Cumulative Stats, and Bond. You can find detailed tutorial descriptions about these systems below for a deeper understanding.
I’m yet to witness the specific workings of DNA Digivolution, but a tutorial description has been provided, explaining how DNA Digivolution skills come into play in this exciting digital adventure.

I’ll outline the fundamentals of Digivolution in Digimon Story: Time Stranger, followed by a gallery displaying all Champion-level Digimon from my team for those interested in their evolution paths. The countdown to Time Stranger is nearing its end; it’s slated for release within a month on October 3 across the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.

As a passionate fan of Digimon Frontier, I’ve been pondering about how Agunimon’s Digivolutions will unfold given the distinct hybrid nature of the Digimon in this series that deviates from the usual rules of Digivolution. In Time Stranger, you’ll find a Beast Spirit of Flame to collect; here are the specific requirements for Agunimon’s Digivolutions I’ve uncovered:
