With the finale of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms now aired, fans are looking ahead to the upcoming sequel, The Sworn Sword, and speculating about how the Blackfyre Rebellions will be featured. Be warned: spoilers follow…
Okay, so this new game, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set in the timeline between the events of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. Basically, it fills in the gap between those two shows – I’m really excited to see what happened during that period!
The first season concluded with a surprising discovery about Ser Duncan’s history, Prince Maekar’s anger over Egg’s latest escape, and the pair setting off for a new journey in Dorne.
Okay, so things are really ramping up in the show! We’re getting close to the Blackfyre Rebellions – that huge conflict everyone talks about – and the showrunner, Ira Parker, just explained how it’s all going to tie into Dunk and Egg’s adventures. It sounds like it’s going to seriously impact their story, which I’m super excited about!
The Blackfyre Rebellions will “inform” A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2

The Blackfyre Rebellions were a series of civil wars that began after King Aegon IV declared his illegitimate children, including Daemon Blackfyre, to be legitimate heirs.
Competing claims for the Iron Throne sparked conflicts between those supporting the Blackfyres and those loyal to the Targaryens. These battles dramatically changed the political situation and caused lasting weakness within the Targaryen dynasty.
Trouble is brewing for Dunk and Egg, and Ira Parker believes upcoming conflicts will start to impact their journey.
According to Parker, the Blackfyre Rebellions are a recurring element throughout Dunk and Egg’s story, significantly impacting events up until the later stages. The Second Blackfyre Rebellion plays a major role in one of the books and is alluded to in Season 1. Ultimately, these rebellions serve as important historical context and shape the characters Dunk and Egg encounter.
We’re still dealing with the aftermath of a major civil war that ended 15 years ago, and many people still harbor deep-seated anger and hurt. Old wounds haven’t fully healed.
Don’t expect new stories or side quests

Parker explained that he made an early commitment to George R.R. Martin to avoid creating new storylines. Instead, the show aims to expand on existing characters and the world Martin built, essentially writing the series as if it were another one of Martin’s novels, fleshing out ideas he likely would have explored himself.
We focus on straightforward adventures and avoid lengthy side stories or deep dives into the past. Each story is self-contained and action-packed – it’s really about Dunk and his squire enjoying themselves and getting into mischief.
Even with longer breaks between seasons—like two years—you won’t be left hanging with unresolved storylines. We aim to tell complete stories that have satisfying conclusions. We hope you enjoy what you’ve watched, and we look forward to sharing the characters’ future adventures when the next season arrives.
You can now watch all six episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on HBO. If you’re looking for more from the Game of Thrones universe, here’s the latest on a Jon Snow spin-off, what we know so far about House of the Dragon Season 3, and a helpful guide to the Seven Kingdoms.
