The Duffer Brothers were persuaded by two of the original cast members from Stranger Things to address a long-standing issue with the Wheeler family in the upcoming fifth season. The Wheelers are playing a more central role than ever before, as Vecna has kidnapped their youngest child, Holly, and both parents are recovering in the hospital after being attacked by a Demogorgon.
Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike, and Natalia Dyer, who plays Nancy, actually asked the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, for more opportunities to act together. According to People magazine, Wolfhard shared during a panel discussion at The Paley Museum in New York City that he and Dyer specifically requested more scenes together in the show’s final season.
We really hoped to share some scenes together, and it seemed like the Duffer brothers were already considering it. It was exactly what we wanted, and honestly, it was a blast working together.
Though they’re brother and sister, Mike and Nancy haven’t really connected throughout the show. They’ve usually paired up with other characters – Mike with his close friends, and Nancy with older, more experienced heroes like Jonathan and Steve. While they shared a few scenes together in the first season, those moments weren’t particularly memorable.
Viewers have been pointing this out for a while, particularly since both siblings are so central to the plot each season. Thankfully, Holly’s abduction provided a good reason for them to team up. While working at the hospital to find out about their mother’s injuries, they discovered Vecna was responsible.
The first part of Stranger Things season 5 leaves Mike and Nancy in separate, dangerous situations: Mike is attempting a rescue mission at a military base, and Nancy is venturing into the Upside Down towards the Hawkins Lab. Their brief time working together did, however, resolve concerns fans had about them not sharing enough scenes throughout the series.
With so many characters in Stranger Things, it’s been difficult for some of them to connect. For example, Will and Steve didn’t actually have a conversation until Season 5, after all the previous seasons. We also saw Will and Robin team up for an episode and develop a new connection.
While Wolfhard and Dyer pointed out the lack of scenes with Mike and Nancy, the final season of Stranger Things will likely show other characters pairing up, depending on what happens. With only four episodes left, it’s a good time for characters who haven’t had much interaction to connect before the show ends.
Stranger Things season 5 volume 2 arrives Christmas Day at 8 p.m. ET on Netflix.
