How Star Wars Would Have Shown Yoda’s Darker Side In Lucasfilm’s Most Controversial Release

Even though the new Star Wars show was canceled, it’s still interesting to think about where The Acolyte could have gone. Plans for future seasons included exploring a more complex and potentially darker side of Yoda, as revealed in some early materials.

Showrunner Leslye Headland shared in a 2025 appearance on The George Lucas Talk Show that future seasons of The Acolyte, if made, would have explained Yoda’s involvement in the Jedi Order’s secret history, which was uncovered in the show’s finale. This revelation would have aligned with Yoda’s established character arc throughout the Star Wars saga.

The Acolyte Showrunner Confirms Yoda Would Have Supported Vernestra’s Jedi Order Cover-Up

According to Leslye Headland, if the show continued for a second season, Yoda would have backed Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh’s choice to hide the facts surrounding murders linked to the dark side.

Throughout The Acolyte, the Jedi Order faced increasing criticism from the Galactic Senate. Feeling the pressure, Vernestra makes a bold move to quickly resolve the investigation into the recent Jedi deaths caused by Qimir (also known as The Stranger), and his associates Mae and Osha Aniseya, hoping to control how the situation is perceived.

Vernestra placed the blame on Jedi Master Sol, painting him as a Jedi gone rogue.

Now that Sol is gone and can’t explain what happened, the Jedi Council has an easy target to blame, which appeases the Senate’s need for someone to hold accountable. This also gives Vernestra valuable extra time to investigate The Stranger in secret – someone who seems to be connected to her past as a former student.

According to Headland, Yoda would have backed Vernestra, even after his short appearance at the end of the first season, because he believed protecting the Jedi Order and its reputation was more important than being completely truthful.

So, after sharing this on the podcast, Headland actually asked fans to be nice in the comments! She explained that Yoda did similar things in the prequel movies, making tough choices, and she was just trying to reflect that kind of character depth. Honestly, it made a lot of sense when she put it that way!

It Wouldn’t Have Been The First Time Yoda Made Dark Choices For The Jedi Order

As a big Star Wars fan, I was surprised to hear the idea that Yoda might have been involved in a cover-up, but when you really think about it, it actually makes sense. Looking back at his actions throughout The Clone Wars, it lines up with some of the choices he makes later on. It’s not totally out of character when you consider the bigger picture.

At the start of the war against the Separatists, the Jedi shifted from being peacekeepers to leading the Republic’s clone armies, hoping to quickly win the war and restore peace to the galaxy.

Yoda, as the leader of the Jedi Order, was central to its evolution, but he also participated in difficult choices during wartime that ultimately contributed to the Jedi’s fall in Revenge of the Sith.

Considering everything we know about Yoda from the Star Wars saga, he embodied both the true wisdom and kindness of the Jedi, but also their significant weaknesses and arrogance.

Yoda’s upcoming appearance in The Acolyte is particularly interesting because his choice to back Vernestra could represent an early instance of him making a morally questionable decision to protect the Jedi’s public image. This act might even be a key factor in the Jedi Order’s decline, marking the shift from their golden age during the High Republic to the more imperfect Order seen in the prequel films.

Since The Acolyte won’t have a second season, viewers might not get to see the story completely unfold. However, the show presented a compelling new idea – that Yoda would prioritize the Jedi Order’s image over complete honesty – which fits well with his established character.

All episodes of The Acolyte are streaming on Disney+.
