Every week, we delve into the mind-bending plot twists of a popular TV series by focusing on its most peculiar, perplexing, and significant unanswered questions following each episode. Expect plenty of speculation, some of which may appear eccentric.
The television series “Severance” is currently halfway through its second season, and it has turned things upside down at least three times, perhaps even four. To start with, we saw the MDR team returning after the Waffle Party Rebellion in season one. Then came the shocking revelation from episode 2 of this season about Mark’s Outie, explaining how the events in the premiere unfolded. Now, Helly’s Outie is acting as her Innie, which seems to be a double role – possibly as a spy and maybe seeking love, along with some other motives. Milchick rides a motorcycle, while Cobel enjoys listening to the Stone Roses. Don’t worry if you feel a bit confused; it’s normal given the show’s intricate plot twists.
Eventually, it’s anticipated that the show will provide resolutions for some of the intriguing mysteries it has been introducing. It seems likely that this will occur. At present, we are still in the early stages of this season, and everyone is still trying to make sense of what transpired in the season finale of last year. However, for now, it’s enjoyable to step back and view things from a broader perspective. The series “Severance” presents a unique world where characters might find themselves on an Outdoor Retreat Team Building Occurrence — ORTBO — which sounds like something Ricken might name a pet dog, but in this context, it feels ordinary? That’s still quite intriguing. For now, the suspense can be maintained, at least for a while longer. At present, it’s more engaging to ponder the questions rather than search for the answers.
Speaking of which …
How long has Helly been an impostor?
At the start of this season, there was a theory floating around that Helly R., when she returned to the decapitated floor, had taken on her Outie identity, Helena Eagan. This theory suggested she was spying on the rebellious MDR team for Lumon. Although I pondered it initially, I quickly dismissed it due to several reasons. First, I wanted to avoid making a strong first impression after such a long hiatus (“Welcome back! Everything and everyone might be fake or robots”). Second, I felt the operation would require too many assumptions. For instance, Helena, being an heiress and executive with no apparent undercover training, would have had to closely observe and mimic everything Helly did to avoid arousing suspicion among her colleagues who knew her Innie better than she did. Moreover, if true, the glance in her eyes when she saw Helly R. kiss Mark was not just envy of her Innie’s newfound connection but potentially a hint of infatuation that could blur the lines between the severed and non-severed worlds in ways that become increasingly uncomfortable to consider. All in all, it seemed like an overly complex scenario.
I overlooked the fact, and it was indeed my fault, as I should have anticipated this. Perhaps she would perform the task poorly, revealing her identity prematurely during a creepy wilderness getaway by being rude to Irv. Later, she might even end up nearly drowning in an icy stream after having an intimate encounter with Mark in a tent. In other words, that was an unfortunate oversight on my part.
Considering what transpired ahead, it gives me a slight headache, but in a more intriguing rather than distressing manner, like after reading a gripping mystery novel. A significant aspect of this is the Glasgow Block, which seems to have been toggled before, and perhaps can be manipulated again in the future. The questions surrounding Dylan, Mark (particularly Mark), and their communication with Helly’s Innie are intriguing. Can they rely on her Innie in the future? Does the Glasgow Block affect other dismissed workers, or is it unique to Eagan? I might delve deeper into these questions on my own.
For the second time now, these episodes have concluded with shocking turns that seem to drastically change the course of the series. frankly, I’m at a loss as to what will happen next, but it sure is thrilling!
On a scale of 1–10, how messed up is Mark going to be after this?
It’s almost unbelievable how bizarre the plotline has become: “The woman he believed dead could be alive as part of a complex conspiracy orchestrated by the company that performed an unusual brain operation on him, which was later undone in a shabby lab. To add to the mystery, it turns out the woman he just had a romantic encounter with in a tent is actually a top executive at the same company, who seems to be involved in undercover activities and might have an obsession with him. I didn’t expect anything like this when I first started watching the show, so let’s rate the plotline as 8 for now, leaving room for things to get even more intriguing.
Additionally, there’s uncertainty surrounding the complexity of the process of reintegration. We haven’t received many details about this yet, except for a brief moment when Mark seemed to malfunction in the tent. It’s unclear if his Innie (inner self) is aware of his Outie’s (outer self’s) knowledge, or vice versa, or if neither knows. At present, there are many questions left unanswered.
I am certain about one thing, which is my preference for a television series that resembles ‘Good Wife’ but is set within the universe of ‘Severance’. This show should focus on an ensemble of good-looking lawyers who specialize in employment and are constantly filing lawsuits.
This was all probably pretty weird for Milchick, too, right?
I’ve found myself inexplicably becoming more lenient towards Milchick recently. He hasn’t exactly earned my sympathy with his actions this season. In fact, he’s been manipulating others, giving that eerie stare, and squandering marshmallows. Yet strangely enough, I find myself reflecting on our shared experiences this season and feeling a bit sorry for him.
In the first season, it was bizarre enough that he found himself overseeing the Eagan heiress after her alleged beheading. However, in this particular episode, he realized she was indeed genuine, yet had to maintain a facade as she chuckled at his campfire tale and threw away edible marshmallows into the fire. I can’t help but wish that on one occasion, he could let loose with a couple of bottles of wine and express his true feelings about this entire ordeal.
I’d appreciate a peek at the rest of his wardrobe as well. From the turtlenecks and leather jacket he wore earlier in the year, to this week’s impressive white parka, it seems he’s moved beyond short-sleeved dress shirts and ties. Let’s take a look at his closet, and maybe we can have a drink or two. These seem like fair suggestions.
Have we seen the last of Irv?
On one side: If you decide to venture out, it’s quite challenging to surpass the intensity of experiences like nearly freezing in the wilderness, having a haunting dream about spectral brides working alongside your crush, and uncovering a secret agent among your colleagues who was sent to monitor you or woo your fellow team member.
However, it appears that Otis Irv still has some professional obligations. Not long ago, Burton seemed to be spying on him at the public phone, suggesting there’s more to uncover in that situation as well. I wouldn’t want to see Otis Irv disappear from our midst.
As a dedicated cinephile, here’s my speculation, drawn purely from my imagination: Resurrected Mark encounters Alternate Irv and they collaborate on the clandestine passage project jointly.
How did the TV on the cliff work?
From a die-hard fan perspective, there are approximately 600 other intriguing questions I’d love to delve into from the ORTBO. However, nothing beats the fascination of pondering over questions like, “Why does the MDR team seem to have eerie doubles that subtly direct attention towards mysterious objects?” or “In the world of Severance, could it possibly be that the tallest waterfall known exists there?” These questions spark curiosity and keep us engaged!
This one has me puzzled a bit, but it seems like it could be one of those instances where our minds get overloaded by complex issues and focus on seemingly trivial matters. To be honest, this isn’t the most bizarre technological mystery we’ve encountered in this series. In fact, it might not even be the most peculiar puzzle from this episode. That title might go to the functional light on the Scissor Cave’s wall where they discovered the new appendix. Nevertheless, I’m still left wondering: How did the TV function without any cables or power sources up there on that isolated cliff?
I swear to god, if any of you say “batteries,” I will heave your dessert into the fire.
Do you ever wonder if Kier was just some pompous bozo like Ricken and things kind of got out of control after a while?
Recently, I’ve been pondering on these topics quite extensively. The connection between Natalie discussing edits for a more employee-friendly book by Ricken at Lumon, and the bizarre excerpts from Kier we heard this week, is intriguing to delve into. It’s almost as if you could swap the audience of Kier’s writings with those at Ricken’s reading and they might not even notice the difference.
In my opinion, I imagine a future world, several generations removed from our current one, in which Ricken is revered like the legendary figure Kier. This world might even feature a collection of oil paintings dedicated to him. It’s plausible that Ricken himself entertains this notion as well.
Which of these phrases used in the episode would make the best band name?
Scissor CaveWoe’s HollowThe Night GardenersLuxury MeatsChaos’ Whore
The Glasgow Block
The solution, at a bit of a distance, seems to be the Night Gardeners. I suspect that Cobel often tunes into them while driving.
