As someone who grew up watching “The Simpsons,” I can confidently say that the episode “Lisa on Ice” is a true gem. Having been around for three decades now, it still stands as one of the best, if not the best, episodes from this iconic show.

“Lisa on Ice,” the 8th episode in Season 6 of The Simpsons, revolves around Bart and Lisa trying to capture their parents’ focus as they compete against each other on opposing ice hockey teams. This tale was inspired by the childhood experiences of Mike Scully, a fresh writer who had recently taken over from Conan O’Brien. He had a strong connection with hockey, which he translated into a narrative. Despite its seemingly simple premise, it stands out as a classic — we rated it as the 35th top Simpsons episode. It’s packed with witty humor (including a brilliant line from Ralph), attention to detail in animation, a surprising level of emotional depth, and a generous helping of satire. It encapsulates everything you’d expect from this iconic sitcom.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the episode, we interviewed Nancy Cartwright (voice of Bart), Yeardley Smith (voice of Lisa), Harry Shearer (voice of Scully), David Mirkin (showrunner for seasons five and six) and David Silverman (consulting producer and animator). This was during a live oral history session at Vulture Festival in November. Cartwright, Smith, Silverman, Scully, and Mirkin shared their experiences working on this special episode, with Cartwright and Smith discussing the emotional impact of performing it, Silverman explaining the efforts made to ensure the animation was spot-on, and Scully and Mirkin detailing how they achieved the episode’s perfect finale – considered among the best four minutes in the series.
