I was really looking forward to checking out this French thriller, The Hunt, on Apple TV – it was supposed to come out December 3rd. But then, just a week before release, Apple suddenly pulled it! They even took down all the information about it from their website. It’s totally on hold now, and I’m so curious about what happened to make them do that.
Claims have surfaced that Cedric Anger, the creator and director of The Hunt, borrowed heavily from Douglas Fairbairn’s 1973 novel, Shoot. Clement Garin, a media expert in France, was the first to point out the similarities.
Gaumont, the French production company, has paused work on The Hunt while they investigate recent allegations and concerns about the show and its creator.
We’ve temporarily paused airing our show, The Hunt, while we carefully review some concerns about the production. Protecting intellectual property is extremely important to us.
Everyone is asking how this situation could have happened. Gaumont’s investigation into the production should provide answers.
What do The Hunt and Shoot have in common? Examining the storylines of each film can help us find the similarities.
The Apple TV show, The Hunt, centers around Franck, a man who regularly goes hunting with his friends. During one outing, they’re unexpectedly attacked by another group of hunters, and one of Franck’s friends is shot. The group fights back, subduing their attacker, and then collectively decides to keep the whole incident quiet. Franck tries to return to his everyday life, but soon feels a growing sense that they’re being watched and that the other hunters are plotting revenge.
Fairbarn’s novel centers around Rex, a hunter who, with his companions, ventures into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend hunting trip. The group unexpectedly encounters another hunting party, and one of the rival hunters suddenly opens fire, wounding one of Rex’s friends. Rex and his companions return fire, killing their attacker. Rex chooses not to report the incident to the police, believing the other group will do the same. However, he becomes convinced they’ll seek retribution and begins assembling a group to prepare for a possible showdown.
Originally, The Hunt was scheduled to premiere with two episodes on December 3rd, followed by weekly releases through December 31st. However, the future of the show is now uncertain. It has been temporarily put on hold while allegations are investigated, and there’s no word yet on what Gaumont and Apple TV plan to do next.
