How does Darth Maul survive? Star Wars villain return in Maul: Shadow Lord explained

Okay, so everyone remembers Obi-Wan slicing Darth Maul in half at the end of The Phantom Menace, right? It always bugged me – how’d he come back? Well, they actually explain it! He gets his own animated series called Maul: Shadow Lord, and that’s where they show you how he survived. It’s pretty cool to see his story continue after that epic duel.

Okay, so this isn’t the first time we’re seeing this villain, not by a long shot! He’s actually popped up in a couple of animated series before – Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. And if you remember the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story, he even had a quick live-action appearance, running the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate. It was cool to see him still out there!

Disney+ and Lucasfilm are filling in the gaps in Darth Maul’s story, showing what he did between the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and his brief appearance in Solo. The new animated series, Maul: Shadow Lord, details how he gained power in the galaxy’s criminal world and follows his encounters with a young Jedi named Devon.

If you haven’t seen all of The Clone Wars, you might be asking how Darth Maul manages to survive. Prepare for a story filled with revenge, fueled by hatred, involving dark magic, and featuring a dramatic set of robotic legs.

How does Darth Maul survive?

Driven by his intense hatred for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Maul somehow survived being cut in half and discarded on a desolate junk planet. After falling down a shaft during their duel on Naboo, he landed in a heap of garbage and was eventually sent to Lotho Minor. It was his burning desire for revenge that kept him clinging to life during this horrific ordeal.

Darth Maul is living in hiding underground, where he’s constructed six mechanical legs from salvaged metal. A snake named Morley helps him by bringing unsuspecting travelers to their lair as food. This backstory is revealed in Season 4, Episode 21 of The Clone Wars, when Maul’s brother, Savage Opress, is sent by the witch Mother Talzin to locate him.

Opress rescued Spider-Maul from Lotho Minor and returned him to his home world, Dathomir. There, Mother Talzin used magic to heal Maul’s damaged mind and rebuild his lower body, giving him two legs instead of six mechanical ones.

Maul and his brother, Savage Opress, then created the Shadow Collective, aiming to destroy both the Republic and the Separatist forces. Maul’s ambition led him to conquer Mandalore and claim the Darksaber. This occurred during the time of Revenge of the Sith, raising a key question: how did Darth Maul manage to survive the execution of Order 66?

Darth Maul also survived Star Wars: The Clone Wars before Maul: Shadow Lord

Order 66 was Emperor Palpatine’s command for the Clone army to kill all the Jedi across the galaxy. At the time, Maul was a prisoner on a Republic ship, guarded by Ahsoka Tano and Commander Rex. When the order came through, and the clones turned against Ahsoka, she was forced to team up with her enemy, Maul, to escape.

Maul caused a ship to crash on a deserted moon, and while it was falling, he hijacked a smaller ship and jumped to hyperspace to escape.

The ‘Maul: Shadow Lord’ series follows Darth Maul as he recovers from his injuries and starts building a new criminal organization between the events of ‘Revenge of the Sith’ and ‘A New Hope’. Knowing he eventually leads the Crimson Dawn syndicate – as seen in the ‘Solo’ movie – it will be exciting to see if characters like Dryden Vos and Qi’Ra appear in the animated series.
