HBO Max boss Casey Bloys has an explanation for how DCU TV shows differ from MCU Disney+ shows.
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU currently includes three released or upcoming shows. Creature Commandos debuted in December 2024, and Peacemaker Season 2 followed in 2025. Lanterns is scheduled to premiere later in 2024, and several other shows have been announced, though their release dates are still to be determined.
What did Casey Bloys say about DCU and MCU TV shows?
In an interview with Variety, Casey Bloys was questioned about whether shows from the DC Universe on HBO Max are being released less frequently than those from Marvel Television.
He explained that his approach is intentional and driven by the quality of each individual script. He prioritizes assessing whether a script is well-written, creatively engaging, and suitable for the show, above all else. He believes that predetermining the number of episodes per year can lead to creative compromises. Instead, he prefers to evaluate each project on its own merits, focusing on the script in front of him rather than being constrained by long-term plans or needing to fill a predetermined quota. He emphasizes starting with the current project and making decisions based on its quality, rather than worrying about what might be lost if it doesn’t work out.
When questioned about concerns that audiences might be getting tired of superhero content on DCU TV shows, Bloys stated that, looking back, their creative strategy was likely the smarter choice. He also pointed out that HBO, HBO Max, and Warner Bros. Discovery have a diverse range of shows beyond Game of Thrones. He noted that while the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is often described as another Game of Thrones spin-off, it’s actually only the second one.
I think a lot of the discussion focuses on projects in development, and sometimes people talk about them as if they’re already finished. I’ve had to clarify that we’ve only released ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.’ We didn’t create five ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-offs because we have other projects, like the recent ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ which is getting a second season, and we’re also developing a ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ series. We’re not limiting ourselves to just one franchise. But logically, if you offer people too much of anything, it loses its appeal. It’s something you have to manage carefully.
