Though a racing movie like F1: The Movie and a superhero series like DCU’s Lanterns might seem worlds apart, the central relationship between characters in F1 surprisingly echoes the dynamic we’ll see between the heroes in Lanterns.
The new series Lanterns starts streaming in August and will be the first time audiences see Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart team up in live-action. The show follows them as they investigate a murder in the Midwest. The first trailer suggests their dynamic will be similar to the partnership portrayed in the F1 series.
Brad Pitt’s F1 Was One of 2025’s Best Movies
As a movie critic, I have to say Joseph Kosinski’s F1 really surprised me. It wasn’t just a visually stunning racing film – the camerawork was fantastic, of course – but the heart of the movie was the complex relationship between Sonny Hayes, played by Brad Pitt, and Damson Idris’s character, Joshua Pearce. Their dynamic was easily the strongest element, and what I think will really stay with audiences.
In the 2025 action hit, Brad Pitt stars as Sonny, a former race car driver pulled back into the high-stakes world of racing with Team APXGP. Sonny is a seasoned, somewhat jaded racer who isn’t afraid to push the boundaries to win. Years on the track have made him rely more on his gut feelings than on following the rules.
Idris also has a promising new driver named Joshua Pearce. Though he’s a rookie with little experience, Pearce is confident his natural talent will make up the difference. At first, he doesn’t see his teammate, Hayes, as someone to learn from, and actually believes he’s the better driver and doesn’t need any help.
Hayes and Pearce often challenge each other and disagree on approach, leading to tense moments. However, they eventually learn to work together, using their individual skills to become a strong team, as seen by the end of F1. It appears the new DCU will feature a similar partnership and relationship dynamic.
How The DCU’s Lanterns Will Parallel With Apple’s F1
The first trailer for the new DCU series Lanterns suggests it will follow a character formula very similar to ones we’ve seen before.
The film introduced the developing, often strained, relationship between experienced pilot Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). But the connections between their story and other elements run deeper than just that.
Similar to Sonny Hayes from Pitt, Hal Jordan is portrayed as a confident, experienced character who isn’t afraid to take risks and often acts on gut feeling. This portrayal closely mirrors the original Hal Jordan from the DC Comics.
John Stewart seems like a self-reliant newcomer, much like Joshua Pearce. Given the success of the movie F1 last year, a similar lead dynamic in the Lanterns series is a promising sign for the new DCU show.
That inherent conflict is a great way to develop compelling characters, and it will be really interesting to watch Hal and John go from being rivals to teammates as the new DC show unfolds. The series will probably start with a realistic, down-to-earth feel before introducing bigger, more fantastical challenges.
Although Formula 1 is a good, recent example, many situations show that people enjoy seeing partnerships develop under difficult circumstances. It’s always rewarding to watch skilled individuals learn to work together as a team, particularly when they each have very different talents and abilities.
Even though some people are debating aspects of the new Lanterns trailer, like the missing green color, I’m completely confident in the two main characters. We already know their relationship is going to be really interesting and dynamic.
Lanterns is expected to premiere in August on HBO Max from DC Studios.
