How Battlefield 6 Is Approaching Locked Vs. Open Class Weapons

With the release of Battlefield 6 getting closer, fans have been passionately discussing the upcoming changes and new features. One point of contention was the initial plan for “open” classes – allowing players to use any weapon – which many preferred not to have, wanting the traditional “locked” classes from older games instead. The game’s developer recently addressed these concerns, confirming that the game will include modes with both class systems to satisfy a wider range of players.

For a long time, Battlefield games have featured classes with their own specific weapons, skills, and equipment. This system, particularly popular in games like Bad Company, Battlefield 3, and 4, helped set the series apart from other first-person shooters. But the developers have been shifting away from this approach in recent installments, and with Battlefield 6, they plan to introduce completely customizable classes – at least in some game modes.

In an interview with IGN, Matthew Nickerson, a combat designer at Ripple Effect, explained that the team wants to give players a lot of freedom in how they play Battlefield 6. They’re building the game’s Portal and other modes to work well with both open and locked class systems, letting players customize their experience and choose the gameplay style they prefer.

We want players to be able to experience Battlefield in whatever way they prefer, so we’re avoiding forcing a specific style of gameplay. We’re supporting both open and closed weapon and class systems in Portal and across different game modes, and will continue to do so. Our goal for Battlefield is to let players ‘Play Battlefield how you want to,’ meaning we want to give them the freedom to choose between these systems themselves, rather than deciding for them.

During the recent public test, the game only showed off one mode with limited character options, and it wasn’t very prominent. We’ll need to wait for the full game to launch to understand how everything works and how much support the developers will give to different ways of playing. We might learn more about the game’s solo campaign at the Tokyo Game Show later this month. Battlefield 6 is scheduled to release on October 10th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
