Cloning is a key part of the story in Star Wars, especially since the prequel movies came out, and it’s changed how we understand certain periods in George Lucas’s space saga. Usually, when Star Wars mentions a “clone,” it’s referring to a copy of Jango Fett, played by Temuera Morrison. He provided the genetic material for the entire Grand Army of the Republic, which fought against the Separatists during the war. These clones were created on the planet Kamino by its inhabitants, and while they’re the most well-known, they aren’t the only characters in Star Wars who could be considered clones.
The introduction of cloning technology in the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones fundamentally shaped the prequel trilogy and made spin-off shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: The Bad Batch possible. Cloning also played a key role—though a controversial one—in the 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, allowing Emperor Palpatine to unexpectedly return. While cloning is largely associated with the planet Kamino in Star Wars lore, the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace actually presented another way for a ‘clone’ to be introduced to the story.
It’s Very Easy To Argue That Anakin Skywalker Is a Clone of His Mother
Akakin Shares 100% of His DNA With Shmi Skywalker

20th Century Fox
Unlike traditionally born individuals who inherit DNA from both a mother and a father, clones are created using the DNA of just one person. In Star Wars, this usually means clones look exactly like the person they were copied from – for example, all of Jango Fett’s clones look like actor Temuera Morrison. However, there are exceptions. The characters in The Bad Batch are genetically identical to other Fett clones (often called Regs), but they have slight differences in appearance and voice.
Okay, so in The Phantom Menace, there’s this really intriguing moment when Qui-Gon Jinn asks Shmi Skywalker about Anakin’s father. She responds that she doesn’t know a father, she simply carried and birthed him, and can’t explain how it happened. At first, you might think she’s being evasive, maybe a father abandoned them and she’s choosing not to talk about it. But it quickly hits you – she’s being completely literal. She’s telling Qui-Gon, and us, that Anakin was conceived… unusually. She somehow gave birth to him all on her own, and that’s just a fact she’s stating.
It’s officially part of the Star Wars story that Anakin Skywalker was conceived through Shmi’s DNA alone. This has led some fans to consider him a type of clone, though the films don’t present him that way. Shmi’s role is similar to Jango Fett, who provided the genetic blueprint for the Clone Army.
‘Star Wars’ Already Explained How Anakin Can Be a Male Clone of Shmi Skywalker
Omega Proves That It’s Possible

Disney+
Cloning in real life is much more complicated than it appears in science fiction, like in Star Wars. The movies often show a simple process of taking DNA, using a machine, and quickly creating many identical clones with customized traits. However, Star Wars: The Bad Batch introduced a fascinating twist: Omega (Michelle Ang) was revealed to be a female clone of Jango Fett. This was likely accomplished by the Kaminoans replicating Jango Fett’s X chromosome, which resulted in Omega being born female. Essentially, Omega’s genetic makeup came entirely from Jango Fett, though with a slight variation.
As a longtime Star Wars fan, I’ve always found the story of Anakin’s birth fascinating. It’s pretty well established that the Force played a role in his conception, and I think that explains a lot! Some fans have theorized that the Force didn’t just start his mother’s pregnancy, but actually altered her biology at a fundamental level – somehow changing a female chromosome into a male one. It sounds crazy, but considering the Force is involved, it feels more believable than trying to explain it with the science we see used on Kamino for cloning. It just fits the magical, fantastical nature of the Star Wars universe better.
Anakin Being a Clone Changes the Skywalker Family Tree
Shmi Is Now… Luke’s Aunt?

20th Century Fox
While there may have been Skywalkers before Shmi, she’s considered the first known ancestor in the family line. This theory suggests Anakin and Shmi would share the same DNA, making a traditional mother-son relationship inaccurate. Instead, they’d be more like siblings, both inheriting DNA from Shmi’s parents. This idea is reflected in the Clone Army, where soldiers frequently refer to each other as brothers.
If we accept the idea that Anakin has a biological father – Shmi’s father – and a biological grandmother – the woman who gave birth to Shmi – then the entire Skywalker family tree changes. For years, Shmi has been considered Luke and Leia’s grandmother, but if Shmi is actually Anakin’s sister, she would instead be their aunt. And instead of being Padmé’s mother-in-law, the clone theory suggests Shmi and Padmé would be sisters-in-law.
| How the Anakin Clone Theory Changes Shmi Skywalker’s Key Family Connections | ||
| Character | Canon Relation to Shmi | Clone Theory Relation to Shmi |
| Anakin Skywalker | Son | Brother |
| Padmé Amidala | Daughter-in-law | Sister-in-law |
| Luke Skywalker | Grandson | Nephew |
| Leia Organa | Granddaughter | Niece |
| Ben Solo | Great-grandson | Great-nephew |
The Star Wars sequel trilogy keeps adding layers to its family connections. When Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) was introduced in The Force Awakens, it was established that his mother, Leia, was the daughter of Shmi, Anakin Skywalker’s mother. This made Kylo Ren Anakin’s grandson. However, some fans have suggested a change to make Shmi and Anakin half-siblings. If that were true, Kylo Ren would still be Anakin’s grandson, but would actually be Shmi’s great-nephew. This new family tree is confusing, so it’s probably simpler to stick with the original Star Wars family structure, even if it isn’t perfectly accurate.
