Horizon Zero Dawn movie is officially happening but there’s one major issue

Sony is aiming to begin filming the Horizon Zero Dawn movie in 2026, but they still need to resolve a significant problem first.

Following the success of adaptations like Uncharted, Gran Turismo, The Last of Us, and Until Dawn, Sony is now moving forward with a Horizon Zero Dawn project for the big screen. This represents their latest effort to bring popular PlayStation games to film and television.

The studio is also planning to turn several other games into movies and shows, including a Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger, as well as adaptations of The Ghost of Tsushima and Helldivers.

It seems like Horizon Zero Dawn’s TV adaptation is progressing well, but Sony still needs to give the final go-ahead before production can really begin.

Sony’s Horizon Zero Dawn movie still needs a director

The Game Post has obtained a legal document revealing Sony’s plans to film a Horizon Zero Dawn movie in 2026, with a projected release in 2027. A script is already written, but the project is currently stalled because Sony needs to find a director.

Now that we have a showrunner, I’m hoping they’ll start talking about who’s going to play Aloy and what the overall story will be like. It’s easy to forget, but Sony initially planned an eight-episode series with Netflix, so it’s exciting to see things moving forward again!

Despite initial plans, the project was cancelled following accusations that Steve Blackman, the showrunner, engaged in bullying and created a negative work environment during his time on The Umbrella Academy.

Although it was a letdown initially, the ambitious scope of Horizon Zero Dawn’s post-apocalyptic world actually makes it a good fit for a movie adaptation.

Beyond who stars in the film, the director is crucial to the project’s success. Sony needs a director who can bring a large-scale sci-fi world to life in a way that feels real and captivating – someone like Neill Blomkamp or Gareth Edwards might be a good fit.
