Horizon Franchise Was Created With Multiplayer In Mind, Says Guerrilla Games Boss

The Horizon series, beginning with Horizon Zero Dawn and continuing with Horizon Forbidden West, has always been a single-player experience following Aloy’s journey. However, the upcoming game, Horizon Steel Frontiers, will be an online multiplayer game. Despite this shift, Guerrilla Games studio director Jan-Bart van Beek recently shared that the team originally envisioned the Horizon universe with multiplayer elements from the start.

According to Guerrilla Games’ Jan-Bart van Beek on X (formerly Twitter), Lego Horizon Adventures was a first experiment with multiplayer features. The studio now plans to expand on this, making multiplayer a more central part of future Horizon games. Van Beek explained that the team has always envisioned Horizon as a multiplayer experience, and while Lego Horizon Adventures was a small initial step, their upcoming game, Steel Frontiers, will take a much larger leap in that direction. They’re promising even more social features and are eager to share what’s next.

We envisioned Horizon as a multiplayer experience from the very beginning. LEGO Horizon Adventures was our initial foray into that vision, and with Steel Frontiers, we’re expanding on it significantly. We have a lot more planned and can’t wait to share it with you.

So, here’s the deal with the new Horizon game, Horizon Steel Frontiers. It’s kinda weird because it’s only coming to PC and mobile – which is a first for the series! Even the VR spin-off, Call of the Mountain, was a PlayStation exclusive. From what I’ve seen, it looks a lot like Monster Hunter, with big raids and everything. But things are also getting messy – Sony is actually suing Tencent, claiming their game, Light of Motiram, is basically a straight-up copy of Horizon. It’s a whole situation!

It seems multiplayer is now a permanent part of the Horizon series, as suggested by van Beek. Reports indicate that Guerrilla Games is currently developing a dedicated multiplayer Horizon game. Beyond that, a live-action Horizon movie is also planned, though details about who will direct, write, or star in it haven’t been revealed yet.
