Hollywood is using “bounty hunters” to track AI companies misusing IP

Hollywood is cracking down on companies illegally using AI to copy their work. They’re now employing specialists – nicknamed ‘bounty hunters’ – to track down and stop these copyright violations.

Gore Verbinski’s new time travel film, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, portrays artificial intelligence as the antagonist and suggests a bleak outlook for a world overly dependent on technology. The movie is being released globally this week.

Lately, artificial intelligence has been causing problems for movie studios, making it harder for them to protect their films and other creative work from being copied illegally.

A quick online search shows AI versions of popular characters are already widely available. However, Hollywood is now starting to fight back against this trend.

LightBar wants internet users to hunt down copyright infringers

Deadline reports that LightBar is asking people online to help find AI models that may have been trained using copyrighted content.

LightBar was created by an anonymous founder who noticed people using ChatGPT to mimic the style of Studio Ghibli films. The company is now testing its technology with content from Paramount and Warner Bros.

According to Deadline, the system works by allowing anyone online to act as a researcher. Users submit potential copyright violations, and a small team at LightBar then checks to make sure they’re accurate.

Researchers can earn up to $2 or more for each accepted submission, with payment amounts varying based on how challenging the request is and how much information is found.

LightBar plans to generate revenue through several avenues, including taking a percentage of lawsuit payouts, settlements, and licensing deals. They also envision acting as a facilitator, connecting film studios with artificial intelligence companies and earning a commission on those partnerships.

LightBar launched last month, and is to seek outside investment soon.

If you’re as interested in the whole AI thing in games and entertainment as I am, you should definitely look into the discussions around Megalopolis, Late Night With the Devil, Thunderbolts, the new True Detective season, One Piece, and stuff Darren Aronofsky’s been up to. Also, keep an eye on Tilly Norwood – she’s an AI creator who’s getting a lot of attention right now.
