Hollow Knight: Silksong Already Has Over 5 Million Players After Just A Few Days, Analyst Says

Without a doubt, it’s clear now that the debut of Hollow Knight: Silksong has been nothing short of spectacular. Recent figures shared by Alinea Analytics show that the metroidvania game has attracted over 5 million players since its launch on September 4.

Rhys Elliot, the marketing head at Alinea, shared on Substack that the game Silksong sold more than 3 million copies on Steam within three days of its release. Moreover, Elliot noted that approximately one million players accessed the game via Xbox Game Pass on consoles among the total five million people playing it. In summary, according to Elliot, this launch is “the largest indie release we’ve ever recorded during that timeframe,” given the $50 million earned through Steam sales.

The Alinea report examines an interesting detail: past games that Silksong players on Valve’s platform have enjoyed. Interestingly, about 78% of these players explored the original Hollow Knight as well, and around 32% have previously played Celeste. However, it’s important to note that there isn’t data on people potentially playing those games on other platforms.

Elliot thinks the unique approach in marketing for Silksong, like revealing only one update about its development each year, contributed significantly to its successful launch. However, an analyst from Alinea speculates that not many games can pull off this strategy. One independent game that could potentially adopt a similar promotional style as Silksong is Haunted Chocolatier, created by Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, who’s also the creator of Stardew Valley.

Over the weekend, Silksong attracted roughly 587,000 players simultaneously on Steam. Team Cherry has planned an update to simplify gameplay, but for those seeking a challenge, they’ve also introduced a secret code.
