A gamer proved the value of owning physical game copies when they successfully recovered their stolen Steam account – not once, but twice – using proof of purchase from 19 years ago.
It’s sadly quite common for people to lose access to their online accounts. Even with security features like two-step verification, account theft still happens. And recovering a stolen account can be difficult. Steam is no different, though many players have had positive experiences with their customer service team who helped them regain access.
Valve needs to verify that the hacked account actually belongs to you, to prevent scammers from claiming ownership of your games. You can prove ownership with information like a credit card number used for purchases, or a receipt from your first Steam game.
A Reddit user has provided strong evidence of their account ownership, dating back to 2006. They purchased a physical copy of Half-Life as part of the “Bestseller Series” from Sierra, a company that no longer exists. While the purchase was for Half-Life, the edition also included Counter-Strike 1.6, which is how they initially verified ownership.
Before multi-step verification was added, this player lost access to their account twice, but was able to quickly get it back each time using the CD key that came with the game. They aren’t the only ones who found this worked – many other players in the comments shared similar experiences, confirming that this older security method was surprisingly effective.
