Highguard players are getting automatic refunds as developer appears to shut down

Sony is giving full refunds to players who bought extra content for the game Highguard, which was shut down just weeks after it launched.

Players on Reddit are reporting that they’re unexpectedly receiving refunds for the game, even if they didn’t ask for them. One player shared, “I didn’t even want a refund – I liked the game and was happy to support it. But if you were hoping for one, it seems they’re being issued automatically.”

Highguard released on January 26th and initially attracted a lot of players, peaking at nearly 100,000 concurrent users on Steam. However, the number of players decreased rapidly in the following days.

Wildlight tried to improve the game based on player feedback, notably adding a 5v5 mode after many complained about the initial 3v3 setup. However, the studio faced layoffs shortly after release, and ultimately announced the game would be discontinued on March 12th.

It seems the refund issue is only affecting PlayStation players, as we haven’t seen similar reports from those on platforms like Steam or Xbox.

This situation is similar to what happened with Concord, a PlayStation game that was shut down soon after launch because not enough people were playing it. The company that made Concord, Firewalk Studios, eventually closed as well.

It’s unclear what the future holds for Wildlight Entertainment. Their website is down, and their LinkedIn page has also been removed.

Chad Grenier, the founder and former head of Wildlight studio, announced on LinkedIn that he will be leaving the company in March 2026.
