The new free-to-play game Highguard, a raid shooter, is receiving overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam. Almost immediately after launch, players have given it a ‘Mostly Negative’ rating.
Highguard’s release wasn’t easy. While it was heavily featured at the 2025 Game Awards, the presentation actually created a negative reaction from many gamers, who were disappointed with how the free-to-play shooter was presented.
The lack of communication before the game released hurt it, as many people formed negative opinions without even trying it. So it’s not surprising that, shortly after launch, the game is receiving a lot of negative reviews.
Highguard has swiftly dropped to a Mostly Negative rating on Steam, with over 9,000 reviews already filed at the time of writing, a mere three hours after the floodgates opened.
Highguard players rush to review-bomb new F2P shooter
Over 9,000 reviews have been posted quickly, and a large number – 7,200 of them – are negative. Most of these negative reviews come from players who haven’t spent much time with the game – often less than an hour.

Some players are offering genuine criticism, explaining why they’re considering leaving the game. A common complaint is the 3v3 format, which some believe doesn’t suit this type of shooter and that larger lobbies would be better.
Most people reacted by making jokes about Highguard, largely because of their month-long silence while discussions about the game began. Many formed their opinions before even trying it.
Players immediately took to online reviews to express their disappointment, with one calling the game “utter garbage” after less than thirty minutes of play. Another simply described it as “awful, truly awful.”
One of the first players to try the game wondered if it was even made by the same people who created Apex Legends. They felt it didn’t have a unique style and seemed to be trying to do too many things at once.
“I want a refund, but I can’t since it’s free to play.”
Don’t pay too much attention to the early negative feedback. Like with many online shooting games, it takes time to learn the ropes and figure everything out. It’s likely the current negative score will change as more people play and share their opinions.
After getting an early look, we’re feeling more optimistic. The shooting mechanics are excellent, and the game has a really interesting design, so we can’t wait to play it further.
