This week’s episode of High Potential included a tribute at the end, and here’s the story behind the dedication ‘in memory of Nicolas Jean‘.
I was totally hooked on ‘High Potential’ last year! It came out in September 2024 and featured Kaitlin Olsen – you might know her from ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ – playing a cleaning lady who’s secretly a genius. She ends up helping the police solve crimes, which was such a cool premise!
The show, a funny crime drama, was very popular with viewers on ABC. Because of its success, the network ordered another season, which premiered on September 16, 2025.
Interestingly, ‘High Potential’ originally began as a French TV show, and that’s the reason we’re dedicating this week’s episode in a particular way.
Who is Nicolas Jean?
Nicolas Jean was the co-creator of HPI, the original series that inspired High Potential.

The screenwriter passed away on September 29, 2025, and this week’s episode of Season 2, titled ‘The One That Got Away,’ was a tribute to his memory.
In 2021, Jean teamed up with Stéphane Carrié and Alice Chegaray-Breugnot to create HPI: Haut Potential Intellectuel. The show has run for five seasons with 38 episodes, airing across Europe, and is now available to stream on Hulu in the United States.
Nicolas Jean also worked on several popular television shows, including the soap opera Tomorrow is Ours, the thriller The Mantis, the prison drama Impatients, and the crime series Promethea. The French writers’ guild honored Jean, with SACD administrator Florence Philipponnat noting that he quickly became a talented and important television screenwriter after entering the industry 13 years ago. She highlighted his unique background and self-taught skills as enriching his storytelling.
He was a naturally inventive thinker, unburdened by limitations. He also skillfully collaborated with talented writers, eagerly sharing his ideas and working with them to bring them to life. He genuinely believed in collaboration and was generous with his creativity.
