Hideo Kojima says Metal Gear Solid 2 became the future he hoped would not happen

Hideo Kojima has discussed how Metal Gear Solid 2 is often seen as predicting the rise of the internet, clarifying that the game wasn’t actually about artificial intelligence. Instead, he intended it as a cautionary tale about the dangers of the digital future.

Hideo Kojima, the creator of Death Stranding, recently discussed his games and the concepts behind them in an interview with WIRED. He answered questions submitted by fans as part of WIRED’s Tech Support video series.

Released in 2001, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty explored ideas about information, control, and the internet, which have become increasingly relevant as social media has grown in our everyday lives. People are still discussing its themes today.

Kojima explains what Metal Gear Solid 2 was really about

When asked if he foresaw our current age of digital surveillance, Kojima clarified that Metal Gear Solid 2 isn’t simply a story about artificial intelligence. He explained that the game is actually about the impact of transitioning from traditional, physical culture and communication to a fully digital world.

Kojima explained that while the first Metal Gear Solid focused on the theme of DNA, the sequel explored the concept of “memes” – ideas and behaviors that aren’t passed down through genetics.

He then discussed what it would mean to live in a world where nothing is ever forgotten – not even something as small as graffiti – because everything can be saved forever.

He explained the game was designed to explore a future where global networks allow instant communication and the sharing of ideas, and how that would change our daily lives.

When people talk about AI in Metal Gear Solid 2, Hideo Kojima actually meant the game explored how digital information can build up and become powerful on its own, not necessarily a true AI with its own desires.

Reflecting on the game over twenty years later, Kojima noted that the future depicted in Metal Gear Solid 2 unfortunately feels more like reality than he intended, and emphasized that it’s not the path he wants to see society take.
