Hideo Kojima Denies Knowing Anything About A Matrix Video Game Pitch

Hideo Kojima has commented on recent news that the creators of The Matrix, Lilly and Lana Wachowski, apparently pitched a game idea to Konami when he was employed there. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kojima said he didn’t know about the pitch and was surprised to learn they had hoped to collaborate with him on a Matrix video game.

Hideo Kojima recently discovered, through social media, that the Wachowski sisters had apparently offered him a Matrix game project way back in 1999. He was surprised because no one had ever mentioned this to him in the past 26 years. He and the Wachowskis were fans of each other’s work at the time and had exchanged emails. Kojima had already seen The Matrix – both in US theaters and at a preview screening – before it was released in Japan. He recalls meeting the Wachowskis three times when they visited Japan to promote the film.

Hideo Kojima clarified that he never received an offer to create a Matrix video game. At the time, he was fully focused on developing Metal Gear Solid 2. He suggested that if someone had approached him about it, he might have been able to find a way to make it happen. According to a previous interview, a meeting about the project took place between the Wachowskis and a Konami executive, but Kojima wasn’t there. He arrived back at the Konami office after the meeting had already finished.

Hideo Kojima and the Wachowskis connected and talked about the common themes in their projects, though this happened over two decades ago, so some memories may be unclear. Over time, several video games inspired by The Matrix were created, and in 2021, Epic Games showcased a technology demo using Unreal Engine 5, bringing the cyberpunk world of The Matrix to life.

A fifth Matrix movie is in the works, but this time the Wachowskis, who directed the previous films, won’t be involved in directing. Drew Goddard, the writer of The Martian, is writing and directing the new movie. It’s currently unknown whether Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, or any of the actors from earlier films, including The Matrix Resurrections, will be in this next installment.
