There’s no shortage of shocking cheating scandals – from the Coldplay kiss-cam incident and rumors surrounding Shakira, to Khloé Kardashian discovering a paternity secret and the infamous “Scandoval.” Now, Jen Hatmaker, a former HGTV star, is adding her story to the list, recently sharing the moment she found out about her husband’s affair – and it’s quite a story.
Jen and Brandon Hatmaker, known for their HGTV show *My Big Family Renovation* in 2014, have been married since 1993 and share five children. In her new memoir, *Awake*, Jen Hatmaker details a difficult moment: waking up to find her husband on the phone with another woman at 2:30 a.m. on July 11, 2020. According to Jen, he smelled of alcohol, and she overheard him whispering into the phone as he fell asleep.
I just can’t quit you.
It was a really tough time, and I understand why Jen Hatmaker felt like it completely flipped her world upside down. She actually wrote that moment marked the end of everything she’d known before, and I can totally see what she means – it sounds like a truly defining shift in her life.
She discovered her husband, Brandon Hatmaker, was having an affair while going through his computer, finding evidence of a long-term betrayal. She doesn’t say exactly how long it lasted, but describes it as a painful period where he spent a significant amount of money on gifts for the other woman, impacting their family’s finances. The next morning, she asked him to leave.
Honestly, after 26 years of marriage, the idea of my husband being unfaithful never even crossed my mind, even though we were going through some tough times. We’d built so much of our life around our faith – we actually started New Austin Church in Texas back in 2008, with him as the pastor and me focusing on writing and connecting with people online as a Christian author and influencer. It just seemed…unthinkable. I recently told the NY Post that…
I was completely stunned, to the point where it felt unreal. It was so far from anything I could have imagined for our lives together that I felt disconnected from it all. The shock was overwhelming, and I was numb – I couldn’t even bring myself to cry.
After the initial shock, Jen Hatmaker experienced depression and anxiety. She was struggling financially and raising her five children alone during the pandemic, and worried she might never feel happy again.
She now feels she understands the situation a bit better and has acknowledged their marriage was struggling. They hadn’t been intimate for two years and had only begun couples therapy two months prior to Jen discovering the phone call. She remembers:
He was frequently absent without explanation, and constantly on his phone – he never let it out of his sight. I noticed the red flags, but I avoided acknowledging them.
After leaving the church she and her husband Brandon founded, Jen Hatmaker found love again. Her new book, Awake, details the pivotal night and experiences that led to this new chapter in her life, and is available now.
