As a huge movie fan, I’ve been following the DC universe closely, and it’s exciting to see James Gunn really kickstart a new shared universe after years of separate films. We just got Superman, and now Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl is on the way! Something I’ve noticed in both projects is the adorable super-dog Krypto. I recently read an interview with Gillespie on TopMob where he talked about how Krypto will play a role in the Supergirl story, and I’m already intrigued!
Until recently, details about the new Supergirl series were scarce, but the first teaser trailer offered a glimpse of what’s to come. We saw Milly Alcock as Supergirl, including a scene of her character being drunk, and a heartwarming look at her bond with Krypto the superdog. I spoke with producer Gillespie at the trailer’s New York City premiere and asked him about what to expect from Krypto. He explained that…
He’s central to the story. He’s essentially her only remaining family, especially considering her cousin is the only other connection to her lost home planet, Krypton. They share a deeply emotional connection that I think viewers will find very moving.
Okay, I’m really hooked! The director of I, Tonya said this new Supergirl movie is going to be emotionally devastating, and honestly, I’m a little scared for Krypto. I was already fiercely protective of that dog in the last film, and it sounds like Kara’s bond with him is even stronger than the one Clark had – which means I’m probably going to be really worried for him throughout the whole movie!

As a movie and TV critic, I’ve been checking out HBO Max, and it’s a pretty solid streaming service. For as little as $10.99 a month, you get access to a huge library of content, especially if you’re a DC Comics fan – everything from the newer DC Universe movies to the classic stories is there. They’ve got thousands of movies, shows, and documentaries too, so there’s definitely something for everyone. It’s a good deal if you’re looking for a lot of content in one place.
Early glimpses of the Supergirl series reveal that Kara is deeply affected by the loss of her home planet. This trauma appears to be the reason she’s been trying to cope by drinking and getting into fights as she travels the universe. Throughout it all, her dog, Krypto, remains a constant companion. Director Craig Gillespie explained that Krypto represents everything Kara lost on Krypton and is the only family she has left besides her cousin, Clark.

Krypto, inspired by James Gunn’s pet dog, quickly became a fan favorite in Superman. Though undeniably cute, he wasn’t always obedient to Clark. Despite this, he fiercely protected Kara’s cousin and the Fortress of Solitude, and even got to defeat Lex Luthor by the film’s end. If you’d like to revisit the world of superheroes, you can watch the Supergirl trailer below.
As only the second film in the new DC Universe, Supergirl really needs to impress audiences and get them excited about what’s to come. Luckily, it looks like a lot of fun, and bringing back Krypto – who was a fan favorite in Superman – seems like a smart move.
Fans will finally learn what’s in store with Supergirl when the movie arrives in theaters on June 26th, 2026. Hopefully, Krypto the Superdog will also be featured in future DC films and steal the show!
