Fans of Nintendo are predicting that downloadable content for Mario Kart World will be announced soon, but it requires looking at several clues to reach that conclusion.
Fans think new evidence points to a possible Nintendo surprise. It comes from information found within the Nintendo Today app, which provides daily news and themes for different Nintendo games. A new Donkey Kong theme recently appeared, and data found within the app suggests it will feature a character who made an unexpected cameo in the Donkey Kong Bananza game.
Spoilers for Donkey Kong Bananza to follow!
A new intro animation for King K. Rool, Donkey Kong’s rival, is expected to appear on the Nintendo Today app on December 15th. This will be Nintendo’s first official mention of him being in Bananza Castle, as his appearance there was a surprise in the game. This has fans wondering if it’s a hint about future content for the Mario Kart World DLC.
AHHHHHH KING K ROOL ON NINTENDO TODAY APP

When Mario Kart World dropped with the Switch 2, I noticed something kinda cool. The Japanese voice actors for K. Rool and that big boss from Donkey Kong Bananza, Void Kong, were listed in the game’s credits… even though those characters weren’t actually in the game! It’s possible they did other voice work, but everyone’s pretty sure it means a Donkey Kong Bananza-themed expansion is on the way. I’m really hoping it’s true!
Fans are speculating about a connection between the recent K. Rool animation released by Nintendo Today and The Game Awards 2025 on December 11th. They believe Nintendo highlighted K. Rool to potentially tease a DLC announcement during the awards show.
A Nintendo announcement at The Game Awards isn’t far-fetched – they’ve done so before. Plus, the limited amount of content for Donkey Kong in Mario Kart World suggests a larger update focusing on the character could be coming.
Mario Kart fans are eager for the next installment, even though the latest game has been a huge success for the Switch 2. While the game almost sold as many copies as the console itself, Nintendo hasn’t announced any plans for additional content. However, they are still supporting the game with updates – a recent major patch introduced features like customizable item settings.
