It’s anticipated that Nintendo will unveil their next console, tentatively known as the Switch 2, shortly, with a release planned for later this year. However, the question remains: how many units will this system manage to sell? According to predictions by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, approximately 4.3 million units of the Switch 2 could be sold in the US alone by the year 2025.
If we’re fortunate enough to see the Switch 2 debut in the first half of 2025 as suggested, Piscatella explained, it’s likely that the Switch will account for approximately one-third of all video game consoles sold in the United States that year, excluding portable PC devices. As a dedicated fan, I can hardly wait!
According to Piscatella, he anticipates that the Switch 2 might encounter “production limitations” for a number of months post-launch, and the quantity sold will hinge on how many Nintendo can manufacture. Even with a new Nintendo console gaining traction, Piscatella predicts that Sony’s PlayStation 5 will likely remain the top-selling console in the US by 2025 when sales figures are taken into account.
Nintendo’s gaming systems enjoy worldwide popularity, and sales within the United States account for only a portion of the total global sales forecast for their consoles. The U.S. video game market is monitored by Circana exclusively.
The new Switch 2 faces a significant challenge, given that its predecessor, which has already surpassed 145 million unit sales and boasts over 1.3 billion games sold so far, is no small feat.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel the excitement brewing! Nintendo has promised an official reveal of their next-gen console by the end of March 2025. With anticipation at an all-time high, whispers and rumors have started to swirl around like a digital storm. Leaked images and speculative details about the potential new Joy-Cons have been popping up left and right in recent days and weeks. Most recently, there’s even talk that we might see the Switch 2 launch as early as April! But for now, all we can do is wait and see what Nintendo has in store for us.
In 2025, the release of Nintendo Switch 2 might share headlines with the anticipated debut of Grand Theft Auto VI, slated for fall that year.
