Saber Interactive, the developers of Hellraiser: Revival, are striving to create a true-to-form adaptation of the iconic horror series, intending to merit an M rating upon its release as a standalone single-player survival-horror game. The original source content, derived from Clive Barker’s novel that underpins the well-known horror film franchise, was remarkably extreme for its time, focusing on individuals inadvertently summoning the Cenobites – entities from another dimension who inflict victims with agonizing experiments involving sadomasochistic themes.
Tim Willits, head of Saber development, told IGN that our goal is to push boundaries as much as possible, depending on the limits set by rule-makers. Ideally, we’d like to achieve this in a single version, but we’re prepared to go as far as we can.
Besides Saber mentioning his consultation on the game’s script, Barker is part of the project as well. As Aleksandra Pelivanović, the associate game director, shared with TopMob, the team aims to depict the violence, gore, sexuality, and overall horror present in the movies accurately. They strive to capture the essence of the franchise and incorporate it into the game authentically. Clive himself was delighted when he saw the final draft for the storyline, exclaiming, “Yes, that’s Hellraiser!
The Entertainment Software Ratings Board often assigns an M (Mature) rating to video games that contain intense depictions of violence, blood, gore, sexual content, and frequent use of strong language. For instance, the Mortal Kombat series has been awarded this rating due to their graphic violence, with notable examples being the fatalities in Mortal Kombat 1 that were particularly gruesome and difficult to stomach.
In this battle game, characters suffered gruesome dismemberments depicted realistically, implying that the level of violence could escalate significantly, potentially leading towards a Mature Audience rating, considering also the adult or erotic elements found in the Hellraiser series.
After a string of mysterious hints, the release of Hellraiser: Revival was officially unveiled in July, marking its debut on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Iconic character actor Doug Bradley will once again embody Pinhead and lend his voice to the Cenobite, regrettably not adopting a scouse accent for the role.
