Fans had been waiting for years, but Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong would launch on September 4th with only two weeks’ notice. Although a few smaller games shifted their release dates, Rogue Factor had already planned to release Hell is Us on the same day, six months prior. Now, the creative director of Hell is Us believes the surprise release of Silksong hurt their game’s sales, and he’s expressed his disappointment.
Jonathan Jacques-Belletête said Team Cherry was within its rights to choose any release date, as he discussed on the Friends Per Second podcast (reported by This Week in Video Games). However, he thought the short notice they gave was “a little callous.”
Jacques-Belletête explained that releasing a game so unexpectedly, especially one as highly anticipated as theirs – often called the ‘GTA 6 of indie games’ – felt a bit insensitive. He suggested that knowing the impact of a large release should encourage more thoughtful timing.
Jacques-Belletête reports that Rogue Factor and Nacon talked about postponing Hell is Us. However, several issues made that difficult, notably the potential need to issue refunds to customers who had already pre-ordered the game.
Jacques-Belletête said they decided to stick with the original date, and he’s glad they did. He explained that they’re much larger than some of the smaller events that were significantly impacted and chose to reschedule. Moving the date for Hell Is Us would have been a major undertaking.
Jacques-Belletête suggested that the release of Silksong likely impacted sales of Hell is Us, although he admitted he doesn’t have the data to prove this right now.
Silksong quickly became incredibly popular on Steam, attracting a huge number of players when it launched. Many players found the game very challenging, so modders started creating ways to make it easier. Eventually, the developers, Team Cherry, released an official update to reduce the game’s difficulty.
