Hollow Knight: Silksong was highly anticipated after a six-year wait, and its release on September 4th lived up to the hype. It received rave reviews and was so popular that it immediately broke records for player numbers, surpassing the original Hollow Knight game in just minutes.
There was so much excitement surrounding the game’s announcement that some independent developers delayed their own releases to avoid competing with it. But others decided to launch their games around the same time, choosing to go head-to-head with Team Cherry.
The game *Hell of Us* unfortunately released on the same day as the highly anticipated *Silksong*, which significantly impacted its sales. The director of *Hell of Us* recently discussed just how much *Silksong* affected them.
Hell is Us director thinks Silksong hurt sales
So, I was listening to the Skill Up podcast, and they were asking Jacques-Belletete about how Team Cherry announced Silksong’s release date – they basically just dropped it out of nowhere, like two weeks before the game actually came out! It was a pretty sudden announcement, and they wanted to know what he thought about that approach.
He explained that what they did was perfectly legal, as there were no rules prohibiting it. He then commented that releasing the game so unexpectedly – a ‘shadow drop’ – was surprising, especially considering its potential. He compared the game to the scale of Grand Theft Auto 6, suggesting that such a release method felt insensitive given its indie origins.
Silksong wasn’t released as a complete surprise, but the very short time between its announcement and launch left Hell is Us with little room to adjust. Jacques-Belletete explained they considered postponing their game, but ultimately decided to release it as planned.
We stuck with the original date, and it was the right decision. Because we’re a larger company, we weren’t as impacted as some of the smaller developers would have been.
Near the end of the interview, the developer was asked if he believed the anticipation for Silksong had helped Hell is Us succeed, and he strongly affirmed that it had.
He admitted he couldn’t offer concrete evidence or exact figures right now, but he was certain it happened. He also noted that early September is typically a very busy time, making it nearly impossible to find a quiet moment.
It’s hard to know for sure how much this impacted Hell is Us’ success, but with Silksong already expected to be a major release in 2025, it probably didn’t help things.
