David Corenswet is now the actor playing Superman in the DC Universe, but it wasn’t long ago that Henry Cavill had the role. Cavill first played Clark Kent/Kal-El in 2013’s Man of Steel and appeared as the character four times total, including both cuts of Justice League. A Hollywood producer recently shared a story about meeting Cavill during his time as Superman and hearing him say something he called “one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard anyone say.”
Alan Powell, the co-founder on Monarch Media, shared this story on his Instagram page, explaining how around the time that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was coming out, he was at a hotel where he ended up holding the door for a lot of people coming and going. Powell ended up standing there for a “good solid 60 seconds” until someone took over for him. The producer continued:
I turned around and, honestly, it was unbelievable. I blurted out, almost without thinking, ‘You’re Superman!’ And he actually looked at me, smiled, and simply said, ‘Sometimes,’ before walking inside. It was the coolest response ever.

That definitely qualifies as a badass line to drop on someone when they recognize you for playing one of pop culture’s most famous superheroes. This encounter took place close to three years after Henry Cavill first played Superman, so between people recognizing him from Man of Steel and all the billboards and other advertisements for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it would have been difficult not to notice Cavill nearby if your attention wasn’t otherwise occupied. The same would have gone for Ben Affleck, if not more so, as he had a much bigger profile than Cavill before becoming the DCEU’s Batman.
Alan Powell recently shared a story about meeting Henry Cavill, coinciding with Zack Snyder – the director of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and the original Justice League – posting a picture of Cavill wearing the classic Superman suit, the one made famous by Christopher Reeve. While Cavill last appeared as Superman in a scene after the credits of Black Adam, there were initial plans for him to continue the role in future DC films. However, when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios, they decided to restart the Superman storyline, which unfortunately meant the end of Cavill’s time as the character.
It’s unclear if Henry Cavill will reprise a role in the new DC Universe, similar to Jason Momoa transitioning from Aquaman to Lobo, but he has several exciting projects on the horizon. He’s set to star in the reboot of Highlander, In the Grey, Enola Holmes 3, and a live-action Voltron movie, though release dates haven’t been announced yet. And, of course, you can always rewatch his performances as Superman on HBO Max, while hoping to maybe meet him like Alan Powell did.
