Heinz believes ketchup and poutine are a perfect match, so they’re creating a limited-edition ketchup bottle just for die-hard fans.
Man, the poutine debate is intense. It’s like the pineapple on pizza situation all over again – everyone’s got a strong opinion on what actually makes a proper poutine. It’s crazy how passionate people get about this stuff!
Poutine, a classic Canadian dish, is traditionally made with french fries, beef gravy, and cheese curds. However, restaurants and food brands are constantly experimenting with it – McDonald’s has offered a breakfast version with hollandaise, and even the Boston Red Sox created a lobster-based poutine, though it proved controversial.
Heinz is now trying to show that ketchup belongs on poutine, a classic Quebec dish, by introducing a special ketchup-flavored version of the meal.
Heinz campaigns for poutine lovers to add ketchup
So, Heinz dropped this video on March 19th showing poutine absolutely covered in ketchup, and basically asked everyone online, ‘Okay, seriously, does ketchup even go on poutine?’ It’s a total debate starter, and I’m here for it!
Most people responded positively, and one user liked the product so much they said they don’t even need gravy or cheese – they prefer ketchup instead!
“There’s nothing to discuss, it needs more,” one chimed in.
“We have seen far worse combinations, so we’ll allow it,” Circle K replied.
Wendy’s wasn’t too sure, simply offering up an, “Uhhhhhh,” in the comments.
Someone commented, expressing their disappointment and saying it was upsetting as a Canadian.
Heinz found that 30% of people were completely against the idea, and another 29% were undecided. Despite this opposition, Heinz decided to move forward and announced a limited-edition ‘Heinz Poutine Ketchup’ bottle to celebrate National Poutine Day on April 11th.

There’s just one thing: you can’t actually buy the bottle. Instead, people 18 and older can enter a contest on Instagram by tagging their friends. But even if you win, you’ll need to solve a math problem to get it!
Heinz is jumping into the poutine conversation, confidently stating that ketchup is a perfect topping for the classic Canadian dish. To mark this announcement, they’re releasing a limited-edition Heinz Ketchup Poutine, designed to be the ultimate version of the meal.
Even though people still argue about whether ketchup belongs on poutine, the dish itself is becoming increasingly popular.
This January, KFC partnered with Matty Matheson, the chef and actor from The Bear, to introduce poutine to customers in the United States.
Joey Chestnut, a famous competitive eater, won the 2025 World Poutine Eating Championship in Toronto by eating an incredible 26.5 pounds of poutine last year.
