As a cinema devotee with a keen eye for fashion-themed productions, I must say, the return of Heidi Klum to “Project Runway” is like a long-awaited reunion with an old friend who’s been off on exciting adventures. Her tenure on the show spanning over 16 seasons is nothing short of legendary!

The news of her comeback, coupled with the series’ move to Disney’s Freeform and subsequent streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, feels like a fresh breath of air in the fashion competition genre. I can’t help but wonder what innovative twists and turns Klum will bring to the table this time around.

It’s fascinating to see how she and Tim Gunn created “Making the Cut” for Amazon Prime Video, further cementing their influence in the world of fashion and competition shows. Their legal dispute-induced hiatus from “Project Runway” seems to have only fueled their creative fire.

Now, with “Project Runway” under new production by Spyglass Media Group and Alfred Street Industries, I’m eagerly awaiting the synergy of these powerhouses in shaping the future of this iconic series. And who knows? Maybe they’ll even consider adding a ’90s sitcom-style laugh track for some extra flair! After all, fashion and fun go hand in hand, don’t they?

Heidi Klum is returning to “Project Runway” after exiting the fashion competition series in 2018.

The news follows the October reveal that the show was renewed for a 21st season and will shift to Disney’s Freeform network, having previously been on Bravo. The new season is set to premiere this year, consisting of 10 episodes. These episodes will be made available on both Disney+ and Hulu following their initial broadcasts on Freeform.

For 16 seasons, Heidi Klum was the host of “Project Runway,” starting from its premiere on Bravo in 2004. She continued her role when it shifted to Lifetime in 2009, staying for another 11 seasons. Then, she left along with Tim Gunn, who was the designers’ mentor, when it returned to Bravo for Season 17. For the subsequent two seasons, Karlie Kloss and Christian Siriano took over as host and mentor respectively. Later, Siriano handled both roles for Seasons 19 and 20.

In the same period, Klum and Gunn launched a fresh fashion competition series titled “Making the Cut” on Amazon Prime Video in 2020. The show ran successfully through three seasons. Notably, this move came as they parted ways with “Project Runway”, an event that coincided with the resolution of a prolonged legal battle between NBCUniversal (owners of Bravo) and The Weinstein Company (producers of the show at the time), who were sued for breach of contract when transferring the show to Lifetime.

Starting from Season 17, “Project Runway” has been co-produced by two studios: Spyglass Media Group, who finalized a partnership with Freeform in 2024, and Alfred Street Industries. Among the executive producers for the show are Gary Barber of Spyglass, as well as Dan Cutforth, Jane Lipsitz, Dan Volpe, and Nan Strait from Alfred Street.
