Fans who were hoping for a lasting relationship between Shane Hollander and Rose Landry are likely to be disappointed, as their romance quickly fizzles out. During a dinner date, Rose awkwardly steers the conversation towards Shane’s sex life, first mentioning her gay friend and then directly asking if there are any gay hockey players. When their intimacy isn’t working, she subtly tries to figure out why. She then bluntly asks if he’s ever been with a man, and Shane struggles with whether to be honest, eventually confessing and flashing back to moments with Ilya. Faced with admitting he’s gay or admitting he’s not a good lover, he chooses honesty. Rose, who has dated gay men before, observes that their relationship feels forced. Shane jokingly responds by saying he prefers to be the receptive partner. He’s just come out, and already making self-deprecating jokes – a sign of things to come.
It’s 2017, and Ilya and his teammate are in Tampa Bay for the hockey All-Star game – similar to an ‘All Stars’ season of a reality competition. You can tell they’re in Florida by their outfits: Ilya’s wearing a Hawaiian shirt, and his teammate has on a white suit reminiscent of ‘Miami Vice.’ This time, they’re on the same team, giving them a chance to spend time together publicly. While at a bar, they both casually ask if the other is attending alone, and they both are, which pleasantly surprises them.
Shane and Ilya share playful moments – joking about Shane getting a stylist, flirting while ice skating, and watching the sunset together. Shane then goes to Ilya’s room, like they often do, but this time he has something serious to discuss. He reveals he’s accepted his sexuality, thanks to Rose, but he’s also grappling with his feelings for Ilya. Their connection has evolved beyond just physical attraction, and Shane admits their last encounter felt deeply meaningful. However, Ilya quickly shuts down any possibility of a relationship. Shane probes, asking if Ilya would want one if circumstances were different, but Ilya refuses to entertain the idea. His reluctance isn’t about personal shame, but genuine fear for his safety. Given the political climate in Russia, being openly in a relationship could put him in danger.
The conversation shifts to Ilya’s family, and he shares with Shane that his mother passed away when he was young and his father is now living with dementia. This is the most vulnerable moment we’ve seen between them, and Ilya becomes emotional before Shane comforts him with a kiss and a hug. This storyline adds a new layer of depth to both the series and the connection between Ilya and Shane, allowing viewers to understand both characters on a deeper level as they navigate these difficult experiences.
Several weeks passed, and then Ilya received the news that his father had passed away. He returned to Russia. He video-called Shane, who offered to help in any way he could. Ilya, in a moment of strange request, asked Shane to disrobe, but to keep his glasses on. Following a difficult argument with his brother, Ilya tried to talk things through over the phone, but found it hard to express everything he was going through, particularly because he was speaking in a language that wasn’t his native tongue.
“Just tell me everything you’re thinking, in Russian if you need to,” Shane says to Ilya. “I won’t understand, but it might help to get it out.” And Ilya does. He pours out his frustrations – how he feels used by everyone, how it hurts that he couldn’t be there for their sick father while his brother was, and how much he loves Svetlana, though it’s not the same way he feels about Shane. He confesses, “What I really want is you. I’ve always wanted you. I’m so in love with you, and I don’t know what to do.” However, Shane has no idea what Ilya is saying, as he doesn’t understand Russian.
We’re now at a hockey game, but I have no idea when or where it’s taking place. The show probably mentioned it, but I missed that part. Honestly, it’s amazing I can keep track of anything with all the time and location jumps, but thankfully, it doesn’t usually matter. What’s important is that we’re on an ice rink and a hockey game is happening – actually, a lot of hockey is happening. Normally, the show quickly moves past the game itself, but we’re stuck watching it now, which feels like a bad omen. And sure enough, Ilya sees Shane get seriously injured and carried off on a stretcher.
He visited Shane in the hospital, where Shane, still groggy but recovering, greeted him with a rambling “Heyyyyy.” Shane had a concussion and a broken collarbone, but he was most frustrated that the injury ruined their plans to hang out after the game – and potentially discuss something more. He’d been hoping to invite Ilya to his family’s cottage for a private getaway over the summer. Ilya’s response was a cautious “Maybe,” showing his hesitation to fully commit to a deeper relationship. But the most heartbreaking part comes later, when Ilya texts Shane to check on him. Ilya simply asks, “How’s your head?” and Shane misses the chance to playfully reply with a flirty joke. It’s a painfully awkward moment, and anyone who thought this show wasn’t realistic will likely be quick to point it out.
Neither Shane nor Ilya competed for the championship this year, so they watched as Scott Hunter won. Kip, who Scott had previously overlooked, watched from the stands with a similar sadness to the one Scott felt when he couldn’t bring himself to go inside for Kip’s birthday. However, Scott found himself alone after the victory, until he signaled for Kip to join him on the ice. There, in front of the entire arena and on television, he kissed Kip.
Shane and Ilya stared in disbelief as Scott Hunter shot the first puck towards the Stonewall net. Immediately after, Ilya excitedly called Shane, simply saying, “I’m on my way to the cottage.”
Butt Dials
This episode presents a surprising shift – a complete absence of explicit sexual content. While initially considering lowering my five-star rating, I realized this was a clever decision. The story of Shane and Ilya is captivating because it shows a purely physical connection evolving into something romantic. This is a complex and realistic development, and makes for a far more compelling narrative. The show’s visual focus mirrors this change: when their relationship was solely physical, the emphasis was on intimate moments, but now that love has entered the picture, the show rightly prioritizes those deeper, more meaningful interactions.
