Director Michael Mann has announced a timeframe for filming Heat 2, the long-awaited sequel to his 1995 crime classic, Heat. The new film will be based on the 2022 novel of the same name, which Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. The novel expands on the original story, acting as both a prequel and a continuation of the events from Heat.
Michael Mann recently told The Guardian he’s planning to start filming Heat 2 in the summer of 2026, ideally on August 3rd. While he cautioned that plans can change, that’s currently the target date. The Hollywood Reporter adds that the shoot will last 77 days in California, meaning they’re aiming to finish production around December 19, 2026, if everything stays on schedule.
‘Heat 2’ is Aiming for a 2027 Release Date

Warner Bros.
The upcoming film Heat 2 is expected to cost $150 million to make. Production has shifted from Warner Bros. to Amazon Studios United Artists because of the budget. Filming in Los Angeles will last 77 days, and the production is set to receive $37.2 million in California tax credits. The film is rumored to star Christian Bale, Adam Driver, Bradley Cooper, and Austin Butler, and Leonardo DiCaprio has confirmed his involvement. Stephen Graham is reportedly being considered to play a younger version of Robert De Niro’s character, Neil McCauley, from the first Heat movie.
Filming for Heat 2 is planned to begin in late 2026, with a likely release date in the fall or during the holiday season of 2027 – a timeline director Michael Mann has previously indicated. The original Heat debuted on December 15, 1995, and earned $67.4 million domestically. If Heat 2 is released in December 2027, it will compete with major films like Avengers: Secret Wars and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Considering the success of the first film, the potential cast, and Michael Mann’s direction, Heat 2 is expected to be a strong contender during awards season.

If Heat 2 does come out in 2027, it will have been four years since Michael Mann’s last film, Ferrari (2023), which didn’t do well in theaters. Before that, his 2015 film, Blackhat, was a major box office failure. Fans are hoping Heat 2 will be a return to the director’s successful form, as he’s known for hits like the original Heat, The Last of Mohicans, Collateral, and Miami Vice. Although filming might not start for almost a year, people are optimistic that Heat 2 will be worth the wait.
