‘He Was Clearly Watching For Sydney.’ That Time Glen Powell Watched A Man Watch Anyone But You On A Plane

It’s not uncommon for actors, like Adam Driver, to avoid watching their own movies. However, actors encounter their work in unexpected ways. Glen Powell, for example, was on a flight when he noticed a fellow passenger watching his film, Anyone But You. He found the experience more entertaining than watching it himself.

The anecdote arose while Powell and The Running Man director Edgar Wright visited Hits Radio UK to promote the 2025 movie calendar entry. After being asked if either had instances where they’ve seen someone consuming a past project of theirs, the Twisters star jumped into the story. As seen on their Instagram, he recalled realizing the guy sitting next to was watching the 2023 rom-com. After watching him for a bit, he eventually asked the moviegoer if he was enjoying it, and got a curt response:

The person sitting next to me was watching ‘Anyone But You.’ During the movie, I tapped him on the shoulder and asked if he was enjoying it. He said he was, then put his earbud back in.

That must have been a really amusing situation! It’s interesting to wonder if the person was so engrossed in the movie they didn’t realize who was sitting next to them, or if they just prefer to keep to themselves on planes. Lots of fans are hoping for a sequel to Anyone But You, and this person might be one of them. However, it’s also possible that the person who spotted him simply assumed it was Glen Powell.

Over the past few years, the Euphoria star has gained a large following. She’s been open about how she feels about being considered a ‘sex symbol.’ After everyone shared a laugh about a short performance by Powell, the director of Shaun of the Dead jokingly suggested it was because of the actress’s appearance. He lightheartedly explained the annoyed passenger’s reaction by saying the celebrity was distracting him from what he was watching.

I generally agree with Wright’s point, but I’m curious how much of it is true. Our review of Anyone But You suggests people were more interested in the stars than the plot itself. It’s hard to argue that Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are attractive, which explains the huge attention their steamy Hulu series received – even people who weren’t already fans tuned in to watch.

It’s great when actors like Glen Powell get to see people’s reactions to their movies, and hopefully more of them will have amusing experiences like that. Hopefully, future audiences will be a little more enthusiastic than the man who watched him and Sydney Sweeney in Anyone but You. If you want to check out the 2023 film, it’s available to stream on Hulu.
