He made a survival horror game that has „overwhelmingly positive” reviews on Steam. However, he released the game for free because he wasn’t sure if players would like it

Lethal Company is easily the most popular game made by independent developer Zeekerss. The game’s success has allowed Zeekerss to explore new creative projects and even release some for free. One example is a psychological horror text adventure called Welcome to the Dark Place, now available on Steam.

The ‘Dark Place’ operates with its own unique logic, almost like a creative space built from real-world inspiration. While much of the experience involves reading and listening, certain locations and events are visually represented. A neat feature is the ability to sketch – players can use it to create maps or just doodle to relax.

The creator told GamesRadar+ he initially released his work for free because he wasn’t sure if people would enjoy it, but that wasn’t the whole story. As he explains himself:

I almost decided to release this game, but I set it aside to focus on other things. Since then, I’ve become more critical of my own work. Now, I only want to publish a game if I’m confident that a lot of people will really like it. However, this game is a bit challenging and requires players to have certain skills to truly appreciate it.

I also wasn’t sure if anyone would even enjoy this, since it’s something I’ve never created before. But after seeing the success of Lethal Company, I’m realizing I don’t need to stress myself out trying to make it perfect.

It seems the developer’s concerns about how players would react to Welcome to the Dark Place were unfounded. As of today, the game has “very positive” reviews on Steam and a score of 88 out of 100.
