HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series will reportedly make a change that improves how the first season ends. Because each of the Harry Potter books will be adapted into a separate season, the show is expected to be a more detailed and accurate adaptation compared to the eight films.
On-set pictures and comments from the actors in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series suggest the show will add details and storylines not found in the original books. A major change is that the story won’t be told solely from Harry’s perspective, allowing the show to explore events through the eyes of other characters.

Johnny Flynn, who plays Lucius Malfoy in the new Harry Potter series, revealed a change from the first book: his character isn’t featured much in the initial story. He explained that he filmed a day or so of scenes, then had a month off before returning to set. While Lucius Malfoy becomes a significant character in the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the show appears to be building up his role gradually before the second season.
Actor Lox Pratt, who plays Draco Malfoy, shared that the show will offer a glimpse into Draco’s home life, with scenes that reveal more about his character. This is a significant departure from the books and films, which don’t show Malfoy Manor until the final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. HBO is introducing Malfoy Manor much earlier, giving viewers a look at Lucius Malfoy and his family life before the rise of Voldemort.
Draco’s Home Life & More Lucius Sets Up Narcissa Malfoy As A Key Character Early On
If the new Harry Potter series plans to delve into Draco’s family life and introduce his father, Lucius, earlier than the books did, it absolutely needs to include Narcissa, Draco’s mother. She’s a key part of the Malfoy family and crucial for understanding Draco’s character beyond what we see at Hogwarts.
Introducing Narcissa Malfoy in the first season is a bigger shift than featuring Lucius. In the books, she doesn’t appear until the fourth one, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when she’s at the Quidditch World Cup. It isn’t until the sixth book and her first movie appearance, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, that she really becomes a developed character.
Narcissa Malfoy’s story involves a difficult connection with her sister, Bellatrix Lestrange, and constant worry that her son, Draco, would suffer consequences for her husband Lucius’s actions. This fear ultimately drives her to make a powerful and binding magical promise with Severus Snape. Fortunately, the series smartly chooses to explore Narcissa’s character much earlier than all of this unfolds.
HBO Is Doing A Better Job Of Setting Up Narcissa’s Huge Role In The Final Season
In the last book and movie, Narcissa makes a crucial decision. Voldemort orders her to check if Harry is dead after he’s hit with the Killing Curse. Seeing that her son, Draco, is still safe at Hogwarts, she lies to Voldemort, telling him Harry is dead. She chooses her family over loyalty to Voldemort, and this leads Voldemort to wrongly believe he’s defeated Harry.
Although Narcissa’s choice connects to the story’s main idea – that love can defeat evil – it doesn’t quite feel satisfying to me. This is largely because she wasn’t a major character until later in the series. The ending of Deathly Hallows focuses on characters we’ve known since the beginning, so it feels strange that someone who didn’t get much development until the sixth book plays such a crucial role in how everything ends.
The upcoming Harry Potter series could benefit from introducing Narcissa Malfoy early on, perhaps even in season one. This would allow viewers to get to know her and watch her character evolve throughout the show. We could see more of her connections with characters like Draco, Lucius, and Bellatrix, and gain a better understanding of her thoughts on Voldemort’s return. By the time we reach the final season, her pivotal decision would feel more natural and impactful because we’ve seen her journey.
