As a huge DC fan, I’m really frustrated to hear that yet another live-action Batman show is leaving HBO Max next month. I had hoped HBO Max would be the ultimate home for everything Warner Bros. and DC, but it feels like they’re pulling content more and more. Just in the last year, they’ve removed series like Gotham, Teen Titans, Beware the Batman, and a bunch of other classic DC shows. It’s disappointing to see the library shrinking like this.
Fans of the DC show Pennyworth will be disappointed on Saturday, January 31st, as the first two seasons are being removed from HBO Max. However, the third and final season, originally from Epix, will continue to be available on the Warner Bros. streaming service for now.
The show Pennyworth was cancelled in January 2023 after three seasons, a result of changes happening at DC Studios after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over. The cancellation leaves the storyline, particularly for Jack Bannon’s character Alfred Pennyworth and the other actors, with an unresolved ending.

The removal of Pennyworth from HBO Max follows a similar situation with Gotham, which was taken off the platform last September. While many viewers may not realize it, Pennyworth is actually designed as a prequel to Gotham, showing an earlier version of Alfred Pennyworth – portrayed by a different actor than the one in Gotham.
Interestingly, when Pennyworth first aired for its first two seasons—which are soon departing from HBO Max—it was marketed under a different name. The subtitle The Origin of Batman’s Butler wasn’t added until Season 3, reportedly to make the show’s premise more obvious to viewers.
Several popular titles, including Taxi Driver, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Insidious: Chapter 2, Dredd, and Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, will be leaving HBO Max in January 2026.
What Comes Next for Alfred Pennyworth at DC?

It’s unlikely DC Studios will quickly create a new show focused on Alfred Pennyworth. However, given that they’re planning a series where Jimmy Olsen fights Gorilla Grodd, it’s clear that anything is possible within the DC Universe.
Viewers will see more of Alfred in the second season of the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader on Amazon Prime Video later this year. However, his next appearance in a live-action film will be in The Batman: Part 2, with Andy Serkis reprising his role.
Andy Serkis has expressed interest in delving deeper into the relationship between Alfred and Bruce Wayne in The Batman 2, scheduled for release on October 1, 2027. Given that the sequel is anticipated to be a more intimate story for Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne, it’s likely his vision could become a reality.
DC Studios is also working on a script for The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce the new Batman and his family of heroes to the DC Universe. As they begin casting for the role of Bruce Wayne, fans can anticipate meeting a new version of Alfred Pennyworth as well.
