It looks like this fall will be huge for fans of the webtoon! HBO Max just made a big announcement about the series, and I’m really excited to see what’s coming.
True Beauty is a popular webcomic (manhwa) by Yaongyi, published on Naver Webtoon. It tells the story of Lim Ju-kyung, a high school student who uses makeup to overcome bullying and become popular. But her new life is threatened when a classmate, Lee Su-ho, finds out her secret. The story has been adapted into a Korean drama, a Japanese film series, and an anime. Recently, HBO Max announced it will begin streaming both live-action adaptations on October 17th.
WEBTOON’s True Beauty K-Drama Series Lands New Streaming Home This October
The webtoon True Beauty has become incredibly popular, racking up over a billion views on Webtoon. The drama series, which ran from 2020 to 2021, further increased its global reach. Starring Moon Ga-young, Cha Eun-Woo, and Hwang In-youp, the show was praised for staying true to the original story while also exploring important themes like self-worth and the challenges of meeting society’s expectations for beauty.
In contrast, the recent Japanese live-action version of the story is a two-part movie released earlier this year: *True Beauty: The Movie* Parts 1 and 2. Kazunari Hoshino directed the films, with a screenplay by Sumire Suzuki. Koki stars as the main character, and the cast also features Keisuke Watanabe and Keito Tsuna. To make the story more accessible to Japanese audiences, the character names were changed: Lim Ju-kyung becomes Reina, and Lee Su-ho is known as Shun.
HBO Max is growing its international content, and recently made a deal to add more anime to its library. This includes popular titles like *Your Name* by Makoto Shinkai and *Perfect Blue* by Satoshi Kon, joining the already extensive Studio Ghibli collection. Throughout 2025 and 2026, the platform plans to add even more well-known anime films, such as *The Girl Who Leapt Through Time* and *Summer Wars*.
True Beauty’s anime adaptation is in North America.
