James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are leading DC Studios, are finding a way to offer both a connected universe of DC films and shows – starting with projects like Creature Commandos and a new Superman movie – and separate, standalone stories. Matt Reeves’ The Batman series is a prime example of this approach, and the latest DC show being developed for HBO will likely follow suit, remaining independent from the main DC Universe storyline.
Variety reports that a TV series based on V for Vendetta is in development. James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are executive producers on the project, have hired Pete Jackson – known for writing British shows like Somewhere Boy and The Death of Bunny Munro – to write the adaptation. Channel 4 in the UK attempted a V for Vendetta series previously, but the project didn’t move forward.
V for Vendetta began as a graphic novel created by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd and Tony Weare. The story is set in a futuristic, oppressive Great Britain controlled by the fascist Norsefire party. V, an anarchist who hides behind a Guy Fawkes mask, starts a rebellion to topple the government and get revenge on those who imprisoned and tortured him. He takes on a young woman named Evey Hammond, training her to help him with his mission.
