HBO Guarantees The Pitt a Season 3

HBO has renewed its popular and award-winning drama, The Pitt, for a third season. The announcement came on January 7th, just before the second season became available on HBO Max at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. HBO’s CEO, Casey Bloys, revealed the renewal at a premiere event in Los Angeles. He previously shared that he appreciates The Pitt’s fast production schedule – allowing for 15 episodes a year – and hopes to create more shows with a similar model, adding valuable content to the streaming platform.

Following a string of successes, The Pitt continues to impress. The show was critically acclaimed upon its debut last year, quickly becoming a hit for HBO with an average of 10 million viewers per episode, and even winning an Emmy for Best Drama Series. The second season will once again be set during a single, 15-hour shift in the emergency room, but this time the action unfolds during Pittsburgh’s Fourth of July festivities.

The show comes from the creators of ER – John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill – and stars Noah Wyle, also known from ER. However, it’s currently facing a lawsuit from Sherri Crichton, the wife of ER creator Michael Crichton, who claims the show is an unauthorized continuation of ER. Warner Bros., the production company, strongly denies these claims, calling the lawsuit unfounded.

Following the lawsuit, Wyle stated he could only discuss his personal feelings, describing himself as deeply saddened and disappointed. He believes this situation damages the reputation of the show ER and feels it was avoidable. Meanwhile, The Pitt is expected to continue building its own legacy with at least two more seasons.
