HBO Boss Addresses Rumored Doctor Who Partnership Deal With BBC

The fate of Doctor Who rests in the balance, but the BBC original series may yet find life with HBO.

As a huge Doctor Who fan, I was pretty bummed to hear late in 2025 that Disney+ wasn’t going to be the show’s long-term home. I remember being excited when Disney+ and the BBC teamed up in 2023, so it was a surprise to see that partnership fizzle out after just two years. Disney+ is still airing some Doctor Who stuff, like the Russell T Davies holiday special in 2026, but nobody’s saying where the show will end up next. However, I just read an interview with Casey Bloys over at HBO, and he hinted that there might be good news on the horizon for Whovians!

In an interview with Radio Times, HBO & Max Content’s head, Casey Bloys, said he’d be willing to discuss bringing Doctor Who to the platform now that Disney is no longer involved. However, he confirmed that no official proposals about the show – or its iconic time machine, the TARDIS – have been made to him yet.

Bloys said they haven’t received a proposal for it. While he wouldn’t rule it out completely, he confirmed it’s not currently in development.

While HBO Max doesn’t currently have concrete plans for Doctor Who, Casey Bloys, the executive in charge, seems open to discussing possibilities with the BBC. This aligns with comments made in March by Lindsay Salt, the BBC’s drama chief, who said the team is keen to plan the show’s future quickly, though she didn’t make any firm commitments.

We’re still working through the details and figuring things out. HBO has been a fantastic creative partner, and a lot is shifting in the industry right now.

Now that Disney+ has decided not to continue with Doctor Who, another streaming service has the opportunity to bring the popular BBC series to viewers outside the UK. The show ended its recent season with a major cliffhanger – a regeneration – as Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transformed, revealing Billie Piper as the Doctor’s new form. This surprising reveal has generated a lot of excitement and sets the stage for the next season, leaving fans wondering if HBO Max will be the one to bring it to audiences.

As a huge Doctor Who fan, I’m really excited about the upcoming special! It looks like Russell T Davies’ holiday episode is aiming for a Christmas 2026 release, though we don’t have an exact date just yet. I’m already counting down the days!
