Jeremy Renner hinted at a possible return for his character, Hawkeye, in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ film, and unintentionally highlighted a potential problem with the direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye, has repeatedly attempted to retire. However, he’s been pulled back into action for major events like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame, and most recently, he came out of retirement once more to mentor Kate Bishop in the Hawkeye series.
Jeremy Renner says his character, Hawkeye, can’t stay retired for long. Even though Hawkeye initially attempts to leave the superhero life, Renner explained to ComicBook that something always brings him back in.
Jeremy Renner seems deeply committed to his family and consistently returns to acting, even after trying to retire. This dedication, however, highlights a potential problem with the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Jeremy Renner’s comments point to an MCU flaw

Jeremy Renner’s recent remarks about Hawkeye returning suggest a larger problem: bringing back too many characters from death, retirement, or alternate realities diminishes the emotional impact when a hero or villain actually dies or is permanently removed from the story.
If heroes can always be easily brought back a few movies later, threats lose their impact. Stories should stand on their own, rather than relying on exciting but ultimately unearned returns or cameos to feel satisfying.
Tony Stark famously said, “Part of the journey is the end,” and he was right. For stories to truly resonate, both heroes and villains need to have definitive endings – they shouldn’t come back after they’ve had their moment.
Okay, so that whole quote feels a bit funny now that Robert Downey Jr. is supposedly joining the MCU as Doctor Doom in the next Avengers movie – who knows how that will even work! Honestly, Marvel’s biggest challenge now is making a really good film when they have so many characters and possibilities to juggle. It’s like they have a huge toy box and need to figure out how to use everything without making a mess.

With both the ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ movies promising massive, universe-altering events, Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers face the challenge of ensuring viewers are invested in what’s at risk.
Hawkeye deserves a peaceful retirement after everything he’s been through. He’s earned the chance to relax on his farm and spend time with his family.
