Have a gander at this cut Elden Ring scene showing a smidge of DLC boss Miquella’s past

As a huge FromSoftware fan, I’m always amazed by how many secrets they hide in their games! Elden Ring is the perfect example – it’s just so massive that you’re bound to stumble onto something hidden, even if it’s by accident. And even four years later, people are still finding stuff! This time, it’s thanks to dataminer Lance McDonald, who managed to dig up a cutscene featuring Miquella – you know, the one Malenia keeps talking about when she’s beating you, and who’s a big deal in the new Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. It’s incredible how much is still being discovered!

The cutscene shows Miquella in the arena where you battle Malenia, at the base of the Haligtree. It seems to be a memory, depicting Miquella planting a young Haligtree. There are a couple of lines of dialogue associated with the scene – though their exact order is unknown – including Miquella encouraging the sapling to grow and offering it as a gift to Malenia. Interestingly, the sapling visibly grows and even bleeds during the cutscene – a pretty striking visual!

The cutscene likely would have triggered after obtaining a piece of the Dectus Medallion from Gideon and then resting at a Site of Grace. As for why it was removed, there’s no official explanation – it probably just didn’t fit with FromSoftware’s vision for the story. McDonald demonstrated that the area where the scene would have played still exists on the map, featuring a more overgrown and bloodied version of the Haligtree, but it’s currently inaccessible and has no interactive elements.

This discovery will likely be exciting for fans interested in the game’s backstory. It’s another good example of how games evolve during development. It also shows that it’s often simpler to keep unused content in the game files rather than risk causing problems by removing it.

It seems like some footage from the Alex Garland adaptation has leaked – someone managed to get a peek at the set. It apparently resembles one of the churches from the game, which is funny to see filmed in a regular British park! I’m curious if this scene will ultimately make it into the final version.
